Why Move to Suffolk?
Full of thriving communities set amid stunning scenery Suffolk, the ceremonial county of East Anglia is an enviable location in which to live. The area incorporates a number of beautiful towns and villages along its 60-mile-long coastline, affectionately named “the Sunrise Coast”. In contrast, Suffolk has a huge amount of green space.
The Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB cover swathes of ancient woodlands. There are three National Nature Reserves in the area and many Sites of Special Scientific Interest. Steeped in a rich history, the county of Suffolk (meaning ‘southern folk’) was formed from the south part of the kingdom of East Anglia which had been settled by the Angles (Anglo Saxons) in the latter half of the 5th century.
Several towns in the far south of the county are only around an hour outside of London and easily commutable. There are no M roads however, there is plenty of A roads crisscrossing the county providing routes to all areas. Newbies to Suffolk are faced with literally hundreds of towns to choose from.
Suffolk’s hub is its largest town Ipswich which boasts one of the UK’s fastest-growing economies! Plus, the rural Suffolk district of Babergh which includes the popular towns of Sudbury, and Hadleigh, was named as the “second happiest place in the UK” according to a study conducted by the Royal Mail in 2019. Residents across the county are kept particularly busy as Suffolk has a long list of annual festivities to enjoy. There is something for everyone from music and food festivals, art and literature festivals to craft fairs, county shows, exhibitions, and more. Suffolk also has many other interesting places to visit and stay further inland. The historic Suffolk wool towns used to be some of the richest places in Great Britain.
The most significant of these is Bury St Edmunds, which is well connected to London and Cambridge and dominated by a 1,000-year-old Abbey. The region may offer picturesque rural locations and ocean fronted properties, but it is blessed with plenty of modern amenities Low-cost housing is available all over the county alongside good schools, encompassing strong, safe communities, making Suffolk a worthy place to call home.
Suffolk Schools & Education
Among the many reasons for moving to Suffolk is, and by no means least, is its world-class schooling. Plenty of options await parents. From highly run state schools, private institutions, and selective schools, they can all be found in the county. Until very recently, all schools in Suffolk used the three-tier system, however, since 2019, the majority of schools are now run using the more common primary to high school system (11–16).
Although not conclusive, here are a few of the counties state primaries with an Ofsted rating of “outstanding” and where you can find them:
The Oaks Primary School – Ipswich
Oulton Broad Primary School – Lowestoft
Copdock Primary School – Copdock
Bedfield C of E Voluntary Controlled Primary School – Bedfield
Martlesham Primary Academy – Martlesham
Secondary schools that have also been inspected and rated highly by Ofsted include:
Hartismere School – Eye
St Benedict’s Catholic School – Bury St Edmunds
Thomas Gainsborough School – Great Cornard
Sir John Leman High School – Beccles
Whilst quite a few of the secondary schools available have sixth forms, if you prefer, Suffolk also has seven good further education colleges. Suffolk New College is a multi-campus mixed general further education college, with the main campus located in central Ipswich. Suffolk New College provides a huge range of courses for full-time students aged 16-18 years including the latest T Levels. These are new courses that will follow GCSEs and be equivalent to three A Levels.
The college also provides education to Suffolk’s adult population and runs part-time and online distance learning programs. The county has one university, the University of Suffolk. The university operates at five sites with its central hub in Ipswich. Others include Lowestoft, Bury St. Edmunds, and Great Yarmouth in Norfolk.
