Woodbridge in Suffolk has been named just that by the Times in 2017 and again this year in 2022. Sitting around 8 miles from the east coast, this historic little town boasting an iconic Tide Mill and peaceful views across the harbour, makes an incredibly attractive place to move to.

    A relatively small population of about 11,000 have the pleasure of living here today however, the region has been inhabited for thousands of years. Archaeological finds in the area date habitation in the area from the Neolithic Age (2500–1700 BC). The Romans also had a settlement here and later the Anglo Saxons.

    The river Deben which runs through the town is beautiful and provides an idyllic spot to walk or picnic. Though its tranquil beauty hides a dubious secret. It was once a haven for local smugglers who landed their spoils along its banks.

    Today the townspeople enjoy a laid-back relaxed kind of lifestyle! Amenities include excellent shops, superb pubs and restaurants, and numerous activities both indoors and out. Plus, frequent markets are held on Market Hill in the shadow of the beautiful Shire Hall.

    Quite a number of younger people who are able to work from home for most of the week, have sold up their London pads and headed northeast to this stunning part of Suffolk.

    Woodbridge Railway station sits on the Ipswich–Lowestoft East Suffolk Line, running direct rail services to Ipswich and Lowestoft, and has ongoing connections to Norwich, Cambridge, and London Liverpool Street.

    By road, the main A12 also means you can reach a number of larger towns along its route including Ipswich, a journey of 9 miles or 22 minutes, ideal for commuting. This safe and community-spirited town has an incredible amount to offer for all ages.

    Schools & Education

    Parents will find an assortment of schools in Woodbridge, both state and independent.

    Within a 2-mile radius of the town centre there are six schools.

    Five of these are primaries, and all are “good” reports Ofsted.

    The main secondary for the catchment area is Farlingaye High School. A large mixed state school with almost 2000 pupils.

    Farlingaye was inspected very recently in March 2022 and rated overall “good” with some “outstanding features” both in Personal Development and for its Sixth-form provision.

    For private education, the Woodbridge School is a co-educational independent school, which has junior and senior departments and facilities for boarding

    Things to do in Woodbridge

    Being situated on the edges of the Suffolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, getting out and about in the local area is a given.

    There are so many picture-perfect places and attractions to explore. Sutton Heath Picnic Area is ideal for a family day out.

    Not only do you have the opportunity to immerse yourself in natural surroundings, but the river is also close by as well. Perfect for a paddle!

    Other green areas in the region include Elmhurst Park, Kingston Field, and Fen Meadow.

    Orford Castle is remarkably intact allowing visitors to explore from the basement, through the lower and upper halls to the roof where there are magnificent views seaward to Orford Ness.

    Long Shop Museum showcases the works and life of the Garrett family. Based on the engineers, workers their tools, and creations. It is a very early example of a building designed for assembly-line production.

    If you are a very social person, you may like to join one of the local clubs and associations, there is something for all ages.

    A sports club for association football, badminton, birdwatching, bowls, cricket, youth groups, and many more.
