Why Move to Wellington
Wellington is a small market town in rural Somerset and is situated 7 miles southwest of Taunton near the border with Devon. Perfectly placed to reach the West (22 miles) and south coasts (24 miles) of the UK. Even better, you can be in the Blackdown Hills AONB in less than 2 miles. A historic town dating back more than eleven hundred years, the once little village was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1096, but the area has been inhabited long before this date.
Yes, there is a link with our cousins across the other side of the world!
The capital city of New Zealand is named after Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, therefore it takes its name ultimately from the English town of Wellington in Somerset.
Today just under 14,000 people call Wellington home. The Times has named the town as the “3rd best place to live in Britain” and it offers everything most people could wish for.
Full of a range of great independents, more than most little villages, shopping is a pleasure rather than a chore. When necessary, you can visit the local Waitrose or Asda, alternatively, once a month you can stock up at the well-attended Farmers Market.
Whilst there are all sorts of interesting things to do in Wellington, it doesn’t take long to exit the village and drive via the nearby M5 motorway north to Taunton, Bridgwater, or Weston Super Mare and south to Exeter and Exmouth. You certainly won’t be short of friends if you relocate to Wellington as there are a large number of local clubs and associations available focusing on a number of activities. You can join the Camera Club, the Youth Theatre Group, and the Operatic Society to name a few.
Schools & Education
Being family-friendly means that the town has a good number of primary schools, and all are performing well, with Beech Grove Primary School the only one requiring improvement.
The newest addition to the town is the Isambard Kingdom Brunel (IKB) Primary School. The fourth school in the very successful and thriving Castle Partnership Trust, within the areas of Wellington and Taunton.
Children filter into the main secondary school in the town Court Fields School for the 11–16-year age group. The school includes a comprehensive sports complex, completed in early 2008.
Wellington is home to a public school, Wellington School. It was founded in 1837 as an all-boys but is now co-ed. Notable alumni of Wellington School include actor David Suchet, chef Keith Floyd, and peer Lord Archer.
