Why Move to Wantage?
The historic market town of Wantage has an awful lot going for it. Although there is evidence of earlier occupation by humans, Wantage began life as a small Roman settlement. King Alfred the Great was born at the royal palace here in the 9th century.
Wantage appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 when it was known as Wanating.
Weekly trading rights were first granted to the town by Henry III in 1246 and markets have been held in the town since then. Located in an attractive region of Oxfordshire, it sits at the foot of the Berkshire Downs escarpment in the Vale of the White Horse, which forms a part of the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
But it is not just a beautiful area, this smallish town has a population of around 12,000 and is among the top 5 safest towns in Oxfordshire, an ideal place to raise a family.
Another top draw is the area’s schools, many of which are rated as “outstanding” by Ofsted.
There is a strong community atmosphere here with an abundance of shops and other amenities on your doorstep, including plenty of places to eat and drink. Wantage has great transport links to Oxford, Reading, and Swindon plus a direct line into London Paddington a journey of just over 1½ hours, perfect for those who commute.
Several new build developments have increased the population of the town over the years but despite this growth, it remains small enough to create a close-knit community.
Wantage is one of Oxfordshire’s lesser talked about towns, but it provides a wonderful blend of urbanisation and countryside amid a very safe environment and efficient transport links – an extremely attractive combination.
Wantage Schools & Education
As education standards are for the most part high in Wantage, it is another one of the lures for families looking to relocate to the town. There are 10 local schools with almost all primaries performing well.
Of particular note are the “outstanding” primaries of Stockham Primary School and The Hendreds Church of England School.
There is only one secondary school in the town, King Alfreds Academy. Unfortunately, the last inspection undertaken by Ofsted found that it “required improvement”, however, the school is working extremely hard to address the points noted by Ofsted.
In contrast, King Alfreds Sixth Form provision was rated as “outstanding” with it being noted that “students make excellent progress and achieve highly with teaching standards being especially strong”.
Older children have several FE colleges to choose from across the region. Wroxton College is in Abingdon although it has several campuses dotted throughout Oxfordshire. It provides a huge range of courses both for school leavers and adults.
The county has two universities: the ancient University of Oxford and the modern Oxford Brookes University, which are both located in Oxford and whose distinguished reputations need no explanation.
