The medieval market town of Tonbridge lies on two channels of the River Medway in the heart of Kent and has long been attracting residents and visitors for its shopping, leisure facilities, its heritage and atmosphere.
Sitting between the better-known towns of Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge expanded as a commuter town after the arrival of the railway in 1842. Today it has very good transport connections into the capital, a journey of just 35 minutes, whilst by road, the main M20 is just 15 minutes away and the A21 links with the M25. Getting around the region could not be easier.
Having great travel links also means that in minutes you will be out and into the beautiful Kentish countryside, breathing in clean fresh air and enjoying some of the best views the UK has to offer.
Not only is Tonbridge a pretty town with good connections, but its property prices are also surprisingly affordable too. With the average property costing £490,358 it is £217,000 cheaper to buy here than it is in nearby Sevenoaks and even more so when compared to London prices.

Tonbridge Schools & Education
Tonbridge has a great selection of schools and colleges where children from surrounding areas travel to enjoy the standard of education offered at all levels.
One of the most noted schools in the town is Tonbridge School. A major independent school for boys, which is in the centre of the town. Founded in 1553 and has been an important part of Tonbridge ever since.
Some of the best state primaries are Slade Primary School “outstanding” says Ofsted, whilst Sussex Road Community Primary School and Stocks Green Primary School are rated as “good”.
The town is also home to several Grammar Schools, including The Judd School, Weald of Kent Grammar School and Tonbridge Grammar School for Girls. The Judd School has received the highest accolade of “outstanding” following its last Ofsted inspection.
Further education is available at West Kent College on Brook Street in the town and there is a small campus of the University of Kent on the site also offering access to a number of higher education courses.
Things to Do in Tonbridge
When you are planning an outing or looking for local leisure amenities, Tonbridge has a very good selection of outdoor and indoor facilities.
It is an area with a rich cultural heritage and spectacular scenery. The castles, stately homes, gardens, vineyards, animal farms, craft centres and country walks in the area are all set in beautiful undulating countryside.
The town has access to excellent sporting facilities with over 20 golf courses within a 10-mile radius, swimming pools, gyms, tennis clubs, bowls greens and more, there is something for everyone.
Tonbridge Castle was built by the powerful de Clare family shortly after the Norman invasion. You will be taken on a journey through time, from 1066 to the modern day, the audio tour depicts the stories of the kings, archbishops and tyrants that have formed over 950 years of history at Tonbridge Castle.
Haysden Country Park is a 64-hectare country park located on the outskirts of Tonbridge. It includes a range of habitats such as river, grassland, freshwater lakes, marshland and woodland.
The site is designated as a Local Nature Reserve and in part a Site of Nature Conservation Interest. There is lots to discover. It is home to a large lake complete with ducks and other waterfowl. A children’s playground and there are seating areas perfect for a picnic.
As this town lies on two channels of the River Medway, the beautiful scenery can be enjoyed from its two bridges, and riverside country walks and canoeing are very popular activities in the area.

Tonbridge Property
The town offers buyers a nice mix of property styles and prices.
To the centre are large Victorian and Edwardian detached houses.
Head to the south of town for smaller two- and three-bedroom converted workmen’s cottages. New developments are concentrated to the North of the town.
Homes have increased overall in value in recent years, with the most expensive streets in Springwood Park and along Philpots Lane.
To consider owning a house in these neighbourhoods you need deep pockets since the cheapest homes will easily cost north of £1.5 million.
