Why Move to Tavistock
Situated in the heart of an area of tremendous natural beauty, Tavistock’s rich and varied history is clearly visible in the fabric and culture of the modern town. Frequently referred to as the “Western Gateway to Dartmoor”, this ancient stannary and market town sits within the county of Devon, straddling the fast-flowing River Tavy after which it is named. It is the largest town in West Devon.
Interestingly, Tavistock can trace its recorded history back to at least 961 when Tavistock Abbey, whose ruins lie in the centre of the town, was founded. Sir Francis Drake was born here in 1542. Not your typical high street, the old streets radiate from Bedford Square and contain some very unique stores offering both residents and visitors a choice of eclectic local independent shops.
As well as some great shops, amenities are more than adequate. The town has a leisure centre, a theatre, plenty of pubs and restaurants plus a very popular market, Granted its Market Charter from Henry I in 1105, it still runs to this day and is open Tuesday to Saturday, plus Mondays in the summer. Nicely placed on the edges of the wild terrain of Dartmoor, ideal for walking, cycling, and riding. Several National Trust properties are within easy reach, Lydford Gorge, Buckland Abbey and Cotehele are all nearby.
Those energetic and fit enough, the National Cycle Route runs near the town where you can cycle all the way into Plymouth or you can opt to just do a few miles, it’s a wonderful way to discover the area. If you enjoy being part of an active close-knit community Tavistock is the place for you as the town is represented by all sorts of club, organisations, and associations.
This small but thriving market town also offers sufficient travel connections, a range of leisure and sports facilities, as well as good schools and several health centres. Small wonder that Tavistock was named as one of the Sunday Times best places to live in 2018.
