Why move to Sudbury?
Set in the heart of the Stour Valley, the ancient market town of Sudbury is mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086 and traces its origins back to Saxon times. The town holds long standing connections to the weaving and silk industries which led to prosperity during the Middle ages. Part of the explanation for Sudbury’s historic wealth relates to its location – near to the coast for shipping textile exports while also being close to London for domestic transport.
In fact, excellent road and rail links (just 15 miles from Colchester and just over an hour to London Liverpool Street and the Suffolk capital of Ipswich) have led to a spate of new residents moving to the town to utilise its commuter hub capabilities. As such the town is said to be benefitting from a phenomenon known as the ‘Cambridge effect’ whereby people who are being priced out of inflated London properties are moving into more affordable areas.
Just outside of Sudbury there are also some very pretty quaint villages in the surrounding and adjoining area, including Lavenham, Clare, Cavendish and the hotly sought-after area of Long Melford. Each offer more peaceful and relaxed country confines without compromising on access to all the amenities and transport connections of Sudbury itself.
Schools & Education
Sudbury has one secondary school, Ormiston Sudbury Academy. The school’s most recent Ofsted inspection took place in March 2018 and they were again, rated as ‘good’. It was noted that since its last inspection, “The leadership team had maintained the good quality of education in the school”. Thomas Gainsborough Academy in neighbouring Great Cornard is also a very good alternative.
There are also several good primary schools to choose from, including Tudor CEVC Primary School, St. Gregory CEVCP, St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Primary School and Woodhall Primary School.
