Why Move to St Ives
St Ives is a market town and civil parish in the Huntingdonshire district in Cambridgeshire, 5 miles east of Huntingdon and 12 miles northwest of Cambridge. St Ives has just been named “one of the best places to live in 2022” by the Times. Many may not know that there are in fact, two St Ives locations in the south of the UK. Perhaps the most famous is the Cornish St Ives, a very popular holiday destination.
However, St Ives in Cambridge is just as well known in this region and, just as pretty in its way. Set along the Great Ouse River, it is a scenic location offering plenty of period properties. great local amenities and is a commutable distance to Cambridge, Peterborough or Northampton.
The town has an interesting history. Ramsay Abbey was home to around 80 Benedictine monks, founded about AD 969. It was an important site and is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The Persian bishop Ivo of Ramsey who gave his name to St Ives is said to be buried at the Abbey.
The town grew around passing trade bringing considerable wealth to its residents. Some of the old affluent buildings are still clear to see today. In particular, the town centre’s beautiful Tudor homes.
The market charter granted in 1110 transformed St Ives’ economy. By the 13th century, its Easter fair was one of the biggest in Europe. Today, a weekly Monday market is still held, expanding during the Bank Holidays in May and August. In addition, there is a Friday market and a Farmers’ Market on the first and third Saturday of every month.
Aside from its markets, there is a host of things to do locally and plenty of great restaurants and riverside pubs to explore. Whilst you can spend a whole day browsing the independent boutiques of St Ives, particularly at this time of the year.
St Ives is still very much a traditional market town whose popularity with buyers hasn’t diminished over the years. The relaxed atmosphere of the town combined with easy connections to nearby Cambridge and, plenty to do in your spare time make St Ives a winner for many.
Schools & Education
While there are a million and one things to sort out when you are relocating with your family, at the top of the list is going to be local schools.
Being within the right school catchment area for good schools is a major determining factor these days.
Thankfully, St Ives has a good choice of schools and most come with notable positive reputations.
St Ives has a main secondary school, St Ivo Academy and four primary schools: Eastfield, Thorndown, Westfield and Wheatfields.
All four primary schools are performing well reports Ofsted who has rated each as “good”.
St Ivo Academy senior school has struggled a little in recent years. However, Ofsted has rated its quality of education and sixth-form provision as being of a “good” standard.
There is a private special school in the town, Aurora Fairway School for pupils aged 11-16 years. It focuses on providing academic and therapeutic services for students with a range of complex learning difficulties.
Things to do in St Ives
Though entertainment may not be at the very top of your “must haves” when it comes to searching for a new location to live, it is nonetheless important.
You want to know that when you feel like getting out and about that there is plenty to do without having to drive for hours.
St Ives is more than able to satisfy most interests no matter what they might be.
Holt Island Nature Reserve is a peaceful location, with lots of birds and insects to spot, and some lovely native plants, ideal for nature lovers.
If you are a sports fanatic, get down to One Leisure. It boasts a wide range of facilities providing a superb training and competition venue that can accommodate sports, activities and events for people of all ages and abilities.
The Norris Museum tells the stories of the area from 160 million years ago to the present day. Packed with 33,000 items it is well worth a visit. Run entirely by volunteers, it is free to enjoy as there is no entry fee!
You cannot go far wrong spending a few hours on or close to the river. Plenty of water activities are available but one of the best ways to enjoy time is by taking a riverboat trip.
