A relatively small town, South Woodham Ferrers is situated in the borough of Chelmsford, Essex. It is nicely sandwiched in the countryside between the river Crouch and fens, Wickford, Burnham, and Chelmsford.
It lies approximately 35 miles from London and 8 miles southeast of the city of Chelmsford and is home to a population of around 17,000. The town, originally a village, is known for its market gardening and poultry farming businesses and has grown substantially since the 1930s.
Along with Burnham on Crouch, Maldon, and Chelmsford, South Woodham Ferrers is a highly coveted location in this part of Essex. The town is compact but provides everything you need. The Band Stand and Clock Tower are distinctive features and lend a local identity to the Town Centre.
The local railway station means London is accessible in under an hour direct into either London Liverpool Street or Southminster. Having Southend Airport only 6 miles away, National, European, and international travel is a simple affair. Plus, the town is connected by the A132 to the A130, A127, and other main routes. The B1012 goes east to Southminster and Burnham-on-Crouch and the B1418 north to Danbury.
Chelmsford is also not far away, with excellent shopping options in the city centre and surrounding retail parks.
Many residential areas are adjacent to high-quality open spaces with some offering scenic views towards the countryside, the river Crouch, and Fenn Creek.
Interestingly, many street names in the southwestern part of the town are taken from the works of J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. Roads such as Gandalf’s Ride, Gimli Watch, Rivendell Vale, Celeborn Street, Hobbiton Hill, and Arwen Grove are all familiar.
With the amalgamation of beautiful countryside and easy access to local amenities, South Woodham Ferrers is seen as a good all-rounder, appealing for families, retirees, and young professionals.

Many of the local state primaries filter into the William de Ferrers School. An academy school, it has around 1,216 pupils aged between 11 and 18. It has been awarded specialist sports, maths, and computing college status.
Following the latest inspection, it was judged to be a ‘Good’ school by Ofsted and well on its way to being ‘Outstanding’. One of the inspectors commented that she would gladly send her children to this school.
