Why Move to South Shields?
South Shields is situated in a peninsula setting, where the River Tyne meets the North Sea.
The town has a little of everything, river frontage, long stretches of coastline and access to a range of green spaces and an interesting maritime history. It is also where the popular 20th century novelist Catherine Cookson grew up; the region is the backdrop of many of her books.
The region has been inhabited since the Stone Age, but it was during the industrial revolution when coal mining, alkaline production, glass making, and a little later shipbuilding led to a population explosion. The towns inhabitants increased from 12,000 in 1801 to 75,000 by the 1860s.
Living in this location means you benefit from good transport links by land sea or air. Newcastle upon Tyne lies around 12 miles away, 20 minutes by car and Sunderland is 7 miles south. The town is connected to Newcastle and other destinations in the region by the Tyne and Wear Metro suburban rail network, making it a popular choice for commuters.
South Shields also boasts sandy beaches and a traditional promenade, where there are a number of festivals and events throughout the year. Nowadays, jobs in South Shields have shifted from coal mining and ship building to service work and light manufacturing.
Among several large employers in the town is Ford Engineering Group. Award winning, global specialists in producing components for the aerospace industry.
Propelling the town forward into the future, the local Council and its partners have completed phase one of South Shields 365, £100 million redevelopment, with an aim to breathe new life into the community.
Town centre upgrades, a new marketplace, improvements to its transport interchange and other exciting initiatives have all contributed to and enhanced the towns overall attraction.
South Shields Schools & Education
As children in South Shields attend the closest school to home, where you move to will be of vital importance when you are planning your relocation if you have a family.
The town has a good track record when it comes to education provision. Within a one-mile radius of the centre, there are 10 primary schools. Ofsted have rated eight of these as being “good”, one which requires improvement and Mortimer Primary School, has been awarded the top accolade of “outstanding”.
Older children feed into eight nearby secondaries, of which St Wilfrid’s RC College a co-ed mainstream, state funded senior school was rated as “outstanding” following its last Ofsted inspection in October 2018.
For further education, South Shields is home to South Tyneside College, one of the two leading maritime training centres in the UK, with facilities including a marine safety training centre and a simulated ship’s bridge for the training of deck officers.
Unusually, the college is home to the only planetarium in the region, and to an observatory; and in its time was a popular visitor attraction for local schools and visitors in general.
