Why Move to Shropshire?
Shropshire is one of England’s most rural and sparsely populated counties. The largest landlocked county in England, it shares its borders with Wales and four other counties in the Midlands.
Although now a rural paradise, the region has a bloody past. Shropshire was once part of the lands of the Cornovii, a Celtic people of Iron Age and Roman Britain. Tribal wars over its ownership were regularly and fiercely fought. Today, the county’s main attraction is its geographical outlook. Rugged and beautiful the area is dotted with rolling green hills, ruined castles, forts and the stunning Ironbridge Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
People visit to walk the varied landscapes including the Shropshire Hills which covers about a quarter of the county. A designated area of natural beauty (AONB), where you can take in some of the most iconic views of all the shires in England.
For those searching for a new place to live, the county has a host of notable towns and villages to explore. These include Oswestry, Market Drayton, Wrekin, Shrewsbury, and the largest town in the county Telford. Although there are no cities located in the county’s border, well within the scope of an exciting day trip there are several buzzing cities surrounding Shropshire such as Manchester, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Worcester, and Liverpool.
Reachable by road in around an hour and 20 minutes is the Welsh coast. This is another getaway destination for those wanting to spend time by the seaside. Alternatively, historical sites can be found all over the region. Shropshire is well connected to the rest of the UK via several very good road and rail links. Most of the county’s larger towns have train stations with Virgin offering a service between Shrewsbury and London, whilst other lines such as the Cambrian line offer routes into Wales.
Birmingham, Liverpool, and Manchester airports are easily reached by road or rail, depending on where in the county you reside each are roughly around an hour’s journey away. There is no doubt, Shropshire enjoys a host of wonderful benefits – among some of the county’s hallmarks is a good standard of living, low crime rates, affordable housing all amid a very attractive environment.
Working in Shropshire
There are plenty of employment opportunities across the county.
Shropshire is an affluent location, with minimal unemployment. Traditionally, agriculture has dominated its economy, not surprising as it is such a rural region.
For those moving to the county today, employment is largely concentrated in the county town of Shrewsbury and several other main market towns of Oswestry, Market Drayton, Whitchurch, Bridgenorth, and Ludlow.
Tourism is particularly important to the local economy and the natural beauty of the county, and its many other attractions draw thousands of holiday makers annually.
Other key sectors include land-based industries, health, education, retail, and manufacturing.
Shropshire also has a high number of small businesses. Self-employment is high in the county, as significant numbers work from home/run businesses from home, even more so since Covid 19 hit.
As with many counties around the UK, commuting to work outside of where you live has become commonplace. The top five destinations for Shropshire residents commuting out of the county are Wolverhampton; Wrexham; Powys; and Birmingham.
Shropshire Schools & Education
State schools and high-quality private schools are available all over Shropshire.
The Shropshire Council area has a completely comprehensive education system, whilst in the borough of Telford and Wrekin there are two selective schools, both of which are located in Newport — these are the Adams’ Grammar School and Newport Girls’ High School (both of which are ranked within the top thirty schools in the country).
The county has many independent schools, including the prestigious Ellesmere College, founded in 1884, Shrewsbury School, founded in 1552, and Oswestry School, founded in 1407.
There are three sixth-form colleges located in Shropshire: The New College, Telford, Shrewsbury Sixth Form College and Ludlow College. Adams’ Grammar and Newport Girls’ High Schools both provide sixth-form education as well as secondary education.
Higher education is provided for by several institutions.
Telford has a campus of the University of Wolverhampton, Edgmond, near Newport is home to Harper Adams University and the third is a campus of the University of Chester, located in Shrewsbury. All offer a broad range of subjects and courses to suit every need.
For more in-depth information regarding education provision for the county visit Shropshire Councils website.
