Why Move to Romsey?
One of Hampshire’s classic market towns, Romsey is very much a sought-after location.
Popular not just because it is well placed with regards to connections or its quick access to many coastal and countryside locations but, more for its gentrified charm and strong sense of community.
This little market town is packed with attractive properties along its higgledy-piggledy streets, particularly desirable are its Victorian terraces. A hotch-potch of period buildings can be found in and around the town centre harking back to medieval times.
Notable buildings include a 13th-century hunting lodge, an 18th-century coaching inn, and the 19th-century Corn Exchange. Though Romsey might not appeal to those seeking a home amid glitz, glamour, and excitement, it certainly does appeal to those who just want a tranquil, laid-back easy lifestyle. It is a particular favourite with families and the over 65’s.
Shopping is a pleasure. All the main high street names are here co-op, ALDI however, as you would expect from an affluent town such as Romsey there is also a large Waitrose store. Many come to the town to shop at Bradbeers, an independent department store well-known in this part of the UK.
Several very nice designer boutiques line the high street and there is plenty to do in the evening with numerous cafes, bars, and restaurants to suit all tastes. A few of the local watering holes have been around for hundreds of years. The Old House thatched pub in the centre of Romsey has been serving ale for about 500 years.
You can top all this off with a swathe of great schools both private and state, and Romsey is an out-and-out winner.
Not entirely unexpectedly, property prices are high, the average home is priced at £464,573. The Guardian has described Romsey as ‘resoundingly, timelessly English, what more is there to add.
Romsey Schools & Education
Romsey is a great place for school-age children, hence its popularity with parents.
Unusual for any town, all of the schools which fall within Romsey’s catchment area are either rated as “good” or “Outstanding” by Ofsted, quite an achievement.
Halterworth Community Primary School is a mainstream, state-funded junior school rated as “outstanding”.
The local secondary school The Romsey School, is an above-average-sized school that became an academy in September 2011.
Last inspected in 2017 and found to be overall “good” with “outstanding” effectiveness of leadership, management and personal development, behaviour, and welfare.
Two schools provide independent education. Sitting on the edge of the town is Stroud School independent preparatory school for 3-13 years.
Whilst Embley day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 2 to 18 years is in Embley Park in Wellow, 4 miles from the town.
With Southampton or Winchester sitting close to Romsey, further education and higher education are both available nearby.
