Why Move to Otley
The market town of Otley is located in West Yorkshire, with a population of around 14,300. Sitting on the River Wharfe, it is an ancient town. There are pre-historic settlement finds alongside both sides of the picturesque River Wharfe and it is believed the valley has been settled at this site since the Bronze Age.
Early development of the town began in the 13th Century with farming and stone quarrying. During the Industrial Revolution in the early 1800’s, Otley was a busy town. Many woollen mills were built along the river and by the mid-19th Century paper mills were also introduced. To house the many workers attracted to the area for work, terraced homes were constructed, the railway arrived, and the town grew rapidly.
This delightful town has been the backdrop for the TV and film industry for many years.
As you wonder through the charming streets don’t be surprised if you recognize scenes from Emmerdale, Heartbeat and The Chase. To add to the charm of the town, Otley has its own Bellman who walks around the town calling out the town’s news and events.
Good connections? Yes, which means that many residents can commute to work. Otley lies 28 miles from York, 10 miles from Leeds, 10 miles from Bradford, and 196 miles from London. The main A660 and A658 offers access to most areas around the town and further afield too.
Menston railway station provides services to many of the larger towns and cities in the area. Leeds can be reached in 30 minutes and Bradford in 40 minutes. London is three hours. You will find the town family friendly with plenty of community spirit. There are many diverse cultural groups to choose from such as Otley’s famous Brass Band.
Otley also has numerous sports clubs including the Otley Rugby club and local golf, squash and cricket clubs are always on the lookout for new members. It’s a great way to meet new friends. Amenities are very good. Otley is a magnet for shoppers and a hub for the area, with an open-air general market three times a week and a good range of high street shops and independent retailers plus three supermarkets including Waitrose.
