Why Move to Oswestry?
There is no doubt that Oswestry’s character is defined to a large degree by its location on the Welsh border. Historically the town has changed hands several times between Wales and England as bloody battles over its ownership were fought. These days it is a much more peaceful location. The even mix of Welsh and English residents now live together in harmony.
Although Oswestry is the third largest town in Shropshire, following Telford and Shrewsbury, the local population of around 18,700 inhabitants enjoy a vibrant close-knit community more in line with a village.
Several key events are held annually, and a large proportion of the town turns out to enjoy the festivities. Oswestry Food & Drink Festival and the Youth Music Festival are among the most popular.
Transport
Oswestry’s lack of a railway station makes it somewhat out on a limb regarding public transport. However, this slight inadequacy is what keeps it under the radar and locals like it that way. When you are ready to strike out and explore the surrounding region you will find that the town has some wonderful places to visit within an hour’s drive, such as Liverpool, Manchester, or the stunning Welsh coast.
The town is a busy retail hub playing a vital role as both a market and shopping centre serving Northwest Shropshire and Mid Wales. The main shopping area is centred along and around the streets of Cross Street, Church Street, Leg Street, Beatrice Street and Willow Street. There is a good mix of independent and national stores available with several including Halfords and B&M situated on the business park ½ mile from town.
According to Shropshire Council, the population of Oswestry is forecast to rise from 18,700 in 2011 to 23,200 by 2026. Several new build property sites have already been developed with additional sites earmarked for the future.
The appeal of this lovely suburban town is clear, its beautiful historic buildings offer a peek at its interesting past, but it has its feet firmly planted in the 21st Century and is busy creating a great environment for all who reside here.
Oswestry Schools & Education
Schools, for the most part, provide the children of Oswestry with a high standard of education.
Being a key educational centre for Shropshire’s whole county means many children attend Oswestry’s schools from outside the town.
Within Oswestry’s boundary are 4 primaries, one secondary one college and an independent school.
Primaries in the area include; The Meadows Primary School, Woodside Primary School, Holy Trinity C of E Primary Academy & Nursery and Our Lady and St Oswald’s Catholic Primary School.
Oswestry’s secondary school Marches Secondary School is home to around 1,200 students and was Shropshire’s first academy!
When it comes to college, students in the Oswestry area can attend North Shropshire College.
