Historically, the main industry in the county was the manufacturing of boots and shoes. Northamptonshire is the birthplace of the British shoemaking industry which dates back almost 900 years. Education provision for older students is well catered for. 7 FE colleges are available and there is one highly regarded university in Northamptonshire.
Spread across two campuses, the University of Northampton offers courses from foundation and undergraduate level to postgraduate, professional, and doctoral qualifications.
Things to do in Northamptonshire
Most counties have their own attractions which are unique to them, and Northamptonshire is probably best known for being the home of The Grand Prix circuit at Silverstone.
Located in Towcester, Silverstone holds several events annually and not just motor racing events.
It is also where the Bennetts British Superbike championships are held. High octane fun all round.
Northampton & Lamport Railway is a steam and heritage diesel tourist railway. Based at Pitsford & Brampton station roughly 5 miles north of Northampton, it runs parallel with the Brampton Valley Way, which means you can walk or cycle alongside it all year round.
Stately homes and historic houses are dotted across the region.
Althorpe house is arguably the most famous. Childhood home of Princess Dianna, it is a wonderful attraction. Showcasing one of Europe’s finest private collections of furniture, paintings, and ceramics, each intriguing room of this magnificent family home has a fascinating story of its own.
Northampton Museum and Art Gallery have just had a massive refurb. Packed with exhibits including the particularly interesting history of shoemaking. The collection tells stories of the people of Northampton and its international shoemaking significance.
Northampton has a pleasant town centre which is great for exploring on foot.
There are several historic churches in the heart of town along with cultural attractions such as the Royal & Derngate theatre complex and Northampton Cathedral.
