Lying in the Vale of Mowbray and at the northern end of the Vale of York, Northallerton is an affluent market town in the county of North Yorkshire. Beautifully placed between the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the North York Moors National Park it offers its residents and visitors some spectacular leisure opportunities. There has been a settlement at Northallerton since Roman times, however its growth in importance began in the 11th century when King William II gifted land to the Bishop of Durham.
Under the Bishop’s authority Northallerton became an important centre for religious affairs. The Battle of Standard between the English and the Scots was fought near Northallerton in 1138. Once an important stop over for coaches bound from London to Edinburgh, it quickly grew and was granted market status in 1200. With the coming of the railway in the 19th Century Northallerton has grown steadily to a population of close to 18,000.
He lucky inhabitants of Northallerton are able to live in a rural idyll yet only be a short car or train journey to the major conurbations. The town lies adjacent to two major roads, the A1 and the A19. The motorway gives the town easy access to Wetherby, Ripon, and Harrogate, while the other road links Northallerton to Thirsk and York in the South.
In a westerly direction the A684 links the town to the rural areas of the Yorkshire Dales.
Northallerton retains its strong sense of community, and like many of Yorkshires market towns and villages, it is underpinned by small, family run businesses.
The bustling High St is home to two extremely popular shops — Lewis and Cooper and Barkers.
It has markets on Wednesday and Saturday and an Auction Mart along with plenty of old pubs and some genuinely nice restaurants a night out in town poses plenty of choice.

Things to do in Northallerton
Visit the stunning 14th century Carthusian priory, Mount Grace, where the ruins clearly show the cells of the monks who once lived there. The entrance takes you through a 13th century manor house which has regular exhibitions and recently restored arts and crafts rooms.
Have lunch at the town’s oldest house, the Old Fleece. Now an inn, its timber gables and great oak beams are an impressive sight.
Market days are Wednesdays and Saturdays, where you can pick up fresh fish and game, meat, clothes, and hardware from the stalls that fill both sides of the High Street.
The Yorkshire Dales have been a holiday destination for a very long time. The extensive limestone cave systems are a major area for caving in the UK and numerous walking trails run through the hills and dales.
