Why Move to North Yorkshire?
The county of North Yorkshire is mostly located in the Yorkshire and Humber region, roughly in the middle of the UK. Yorkshire is often described as “God’s own county/country” due to its beautiful landscape and unspoiled countryside.
It is big, measuring 2,483 square miles and has an approximate population of 1,000,000. Making North Yorkshire the largest county in England by land area. Formed in 1974 as a result of the Local Government Act 1972. Several locations were reorganised and became North Yorkshire.
Made up of eleven districts, and four unitary authorities, North Yorkshire incorporates the City of York, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland, which are entirely within the county. As well as a portion of Stockon-on-Tees, which is split with County Durham.
The county sits in a very beautiful location bordering the North Sea to the east. Plus, it also contains two national parks: the North York Moors and most of the Yorkshire Dales.
Around 40% of it sits within a national park. There is a huge and diverse selection of attractions in the county, and tourism is very important to its economy. On average there are around 1.4m visits to the area annually. Aside from the national parks, the North Yorkshire coast is among the most visited destinations in the UK.
Old favourites such as Whitby and Scarborough ensure that the region is as popular a holiday destination today as it has ever been.
It helps that the county is incredibly accessible. Connections include some major motorways such as the A1M and A66M. In addition, there is a huge selection of rail options and four major airports within its borders.
As well as easy travel links, property buyers, are faced with some fantastic towns, villages, and cities to choose from. There is no doubt that North Yorkshire offers a high quality of life. If you are trawling this large and varied county with the intent to settle here, you are in for a treat.
With a myriad of countryside pursuits, premium shopping destinations, historical attractions and popular coastal areas, together with a home you can afford, North Yorkshire could suit you perfectly.
Working in North Yorkshire
Tourism is a vital part of the economy in North Yorkshire generating an estimated £1.5bn of visitor spend each year and supporting 41,000 jobs.
The two national parks combined with the historic towns of York and Harrogate are the top tourist destinations in the geographic area.
Unfortunately, lockdowns and travel restrictions necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic had a negative effect on North Yorkshire’s economy during much of 2020 and into 2021.
Following a period of uncertainty and job losses, North Yorkshire’s tourists are returning, and economy figures have, and continue to improve.
However, although tourism is still a significant contributor to North Yorkshire’s overall economy, there are other sectors where it is possible to find work.
In large areas of North Yorkshire, agriculture is the primary source of employment; some 85% of the county is rural.
North Yorkshire has sectorial strengths in manufacturing, accommodation, food (primarily for tourists), and logistics and transport.
With many of our counties, including North Yorkshire undergoing a significant amount of regeneration and development, work within construction can be found in more urban areas.
Other sectors such as administrative and support services, information and communication, and professional, scientific, and technical services are being encouraged to develop.
It is hoped that in the next decade, more jobs will be created across a swathe of new and growing sectors ensuring that North Yorkshire’s economy continues to flourish, and its residents prosper as a result.

North Yorkshire Schools & Education
The North Yorkshire Local Education Authority (LEA) operates a mostly comprehensive education system. There are at the last count, around 370 state-run primary schools and 86 state secondary schools (not including sixth-form colleges) operating in the county.
For those who opt for private education, 24 independent schools are also available for children aged 2-19 years. 8 special or alternative schools ensure that children with a range of special needs requirements are well catered for.
Finding a home that is located close to a good school is uppermost in most parents’ minds when searching for a property in a new area. It can very often make or break a deal.
With 28.68% of pupils in North Yorkshire achieving 5 or more grades in GCSEs in 2019 as compared with England’s average of 25.13%, finding a good school shouldn’t pose too much of a problem.
According to Snobe, some of the best schools include:
Primaries: Selby Abbey CofE Primary School in Selby, Haxby Road Primary Academy in York, and St Wilfrid’s Catholic Primary School in Ripon.
Secondaries: Huntington School in Huntington, All Saints RC School in York, and Outwood Academy in Ripon.
As older students move on to further education, there are four within the county to choose from. Craven College, Scarborough Sixth Form College, Scarborough TEC, and Selby College. Each provides a good selection of courses for post-16 students.
You will find 12 universities in North Yorkshire of varying sizes. The largest with a register of around 39,000 students is Leeds Beckett University. An old university with a formidable reputation for producing some well-known post-graduates including sportsmen, journalists, musicians, and politicians.
Things to do in North Yorkshire
The sky is the limit for anyone who chooses to visit North Yorkshire, let alone for those who are lucky enough to live here.
Quite a few of the county’s coastal destinations regularly make the top “10 best lists”. Often called the Dinosaur Coast, the North Sea shoreline is scattered with fossils and interesting rocks. The ideal place to visit for all ages and all seasons.
Robin Hood’s Bay is a village that is steeped in history. It consists of a maze of tiny streets winding down to a long stretch of sandy beach. Plus, the bay has a tradition of smuggling!
The City of York is a key attraction. York Minster and York Castle Museum will keep the most historically minded among us happy for hours.
If you are looking for some serious retail therapy, you can’t go far wrong in the spa town of Harrogate. You have a choice of independent stores whose collections have been created to provide something a little bit different. Complemented by several main shopping areas that provide fashionistas with a good selection of high-street clothing stores.
Vast numbers of people who visit the county come to experience its two National Parks – The North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales. Wild and rugged forged by nature they are very special places indeed. People love to hike, cycle, and climb here. Incredibly, the York Moors has 1400 miles of public walking routes to explore.
The Dales, also attract hikers to its many trails, many of which lead to waterfalls and picturesque villages and small towns. As the county is so large it is packed with literally, hundreds of other leisure opportunities.

North Yorkshire Property
There has been a lot going on in the UK’s housing market this year.
We have seen house prices skyrocketing in some areas and a shortage of homes for buyers in others.
The same can be said for North Yorkshire. However, things have now slowed down and the number of homes for sale currently across the county has increased.
According to Zoopla, there are 4044 properties on the market with the average home costing £274,473.
Some areas are cheaper than others, but it is not always the price of a home that determines where you live.
Transport connections and good schools plus, accessibility to amenities are just a few other factors which can influence buyers.
The good news is that North Yorkshire has a town, village, or city to suit all tastes and budgets.
Redcar, Easingwold and Middlesbrough are traditionally places where you can buy a home for less. In these areas property prices start from £39,000 for a one-bedroom flat.
Whilst homes by the sea generally command premium prices, Scarborough and Whitby seem to buck this trend. The average price paid for a home in these locations is £287,678 and £207,501 respectively.
Those who are looking to retire to a small quiet community might try searching in Boroughbridge and its surrounding villages.
Boroughbridge is a good alternative for people moving out of the suburbs, though it is a bit pricey for North Yorkshire with an average of £314,538.
Regularly topping the “most expensive” lists include places such as Harrogate and Leyburn. Harrogate has the most expensive average house price which stands at £395,365.
As you can see, buyers will find a potential location and property price covering all pockets in North Yorkshire.
Stats as per Zoopla – January 2023
