Why Move to Margate?
Being situated in the beautiful county of Kent, the “Garden of England”, the seaside town of Margate has plenty of appeal. Easy access to the Kentish coast and countryside offers a host of activities as well as fast connectivity to Europe via the nearby Euro Tunnel. With the capital just 1 hour 20 minutes away via the high-speed train, Margate is also geographically desirable for commuters.
Many residents have moved to Margate from London favouring it for a slightly slower pace of life which is true. However, the town also has a very lively side due to much regeneration in recent years attracting new businesses and creative people.
Gone is the rather run-down shabby reputation it once had and replacing it are projects such as a new trendy art gallery, a swathe of independent vintage shopping stores, and many other updated facilities. For those who still enjoy the nostalgia of the “old days”, the promenade has kept its Victorian theme and bucket and spade ethos.
Donkey rides, amusements, rollercoasters, jellied eels, and fish and chips have not entirely disappeared, they have just been updated a little. In addition, the Westwood Cross shopping centre provides all of the major chain stores as well as a Vue cinema, a Grosvenor Casino, and a swathe of cafes and restaurants.
Margate has some very good schools and a booming property market both for private buyers and buy-to-let investors. Margate is a seaside resort that has gone through many changes, declines, and revivals spanning nearly 300 years. Currently though, it is a hard one to beat when it comes to choosing a new relocation destination by the sea.
Margate Schools & Education
When you relocate with your family, schooling is a major consideration and research is key.
Margate offers a range of state schools as well as the nearby privately run Chartfield School. A mainstream independently funded junior school for boys and girls in Westgate-on-Sea.
Highly recommended state schools include the “outstanding” Cliftonville Primary School and Callis Grange Nursery & Infant School.
For older children, Dane Court Grammar School and King Ethelbert School have both performed well in recent years.
Just over 3 miles from Margate is Broadstairs College. It offers students in the district a wide selection of vocational courses.
From its roots as a catering college, Broadstairs has grown and now provides a range of vocational pathways in many other areas.
Each year the college trains over 800 young people, as well as supporting apprentices, higher education learners, and adults.
Things to Do in Margate
Margate does not disappoint when it comes to providing quality entertainment.
Margate Beach has all the benefits of a traditional British seaside resort. As well as the usual array of attractions, the revitalisation of Dreamland has been a huge success for the town.
Dreamland is a unique venue and the oldest surviving amusement park in the UK. All the great rides are located here it certainly is a seaside sensation, your one-stop-shop for culture, food, festival fun.
Margate Winter Gardens is an extremely popular place to visit all year round. It opened on 3rd August 1911 and remains one of Kent’s largest entertainment and banqueting venues hosting a wide variety of events from summer shows and musicals to top TV performers and plays.
Those of a cultural persuasion will be enthralled by the world-famous Turner Contemporary gallery, located in the space where the artist himself once resided. The Theatre Royal is the second-oldest venue of its kind in the country and continues to provide entertainment for all the family.
If music is more your thing, there is always the renowned Margate Jazz Festival which attracts a huge number of fans and internationally respected artists every year.
With Europe just a short journey away by train, a cheeky weekend away is not out of the question and will not break the bank financially either with plenty of special deals available.
Plus, London could not be closer. Our diverse capital is home to some of the world’s best sights, attractions, and activities.
Tourists from around the globe flock to the city in ever-increasing numbers whilst those lucky enough to reside in Margate only have a short train journey in order to access all London’s wonders.
Margate Property
The town offers great value for money and is still inexpensive compared to other areas of the southeast.
There are plenty of homes on the market, with nearby Cliftonville also receiving high levels of interest, particularly from London buyers eager to live by the sea.
Good areas include the town’s Victorian neighbourhoods such as Northdown and Kingsgate.
The old part of town with its winding lanes lined with pretty terraced cottages is another great area whilst the seafront poses some grand homes with panoramic sea views.
