Why Move to Llanelli
The market town of Llanelli is the largest town in the county of Carmarthenshire, Wales.
Perched on the banks of the beautiful Loughor Estuary, it offers those who live here an amazing setting – mesmerising vistas and incredible sunsets.
Llanelli is a thriving urban area well located close to the M4, just 10 miles from Swansea and 12 miles from the Welsh county town of Carmarthen. Famous for its rugby tradition and as a centre of tinplate production, Llanelli enjoys a close-knit community atmosphere.
Away from the main town, Llanelli is quite rural and has masses of surrounding farmland to the north and east. The town borders the pretty villages of Llwynhendy, Llangennech, Dafen, and Pemberton offering a great choice of very inexpensive places to buy a home.
Much work has been underway to enhance and modernise the town and its cultural facilities. Evidence of this transformation is clearly noticeable with modern architecture and new buildings as the redevelopment of the area continue to increase the appeal of Llanelli.
When you live in Llanelli, you are never far from the seaside. Nearby is the beautifully scenic Carmarthen Bay and its estuaries, both Special Areas of Conservation.
A long swathe of sandy shoreline makes the bay extremely popular with families.
Carmarthen Bay coastal path forms part of a stunning 870-mile walking route, a great way to explore the area. Moving to Llanelli poses plenty of advantages. Easy access to major towns and cities across the region. Additionally, you can take full advantage of the area’s laidback coastal lifestyle whilst being close to some of the most beautiful rural scenery in the UK.
Schools & Education
As with any relocation, if you intend to make a move with school-age children, you will need to book school places well before your move.
A distinct education system has developed in Wales and although it is English in ethos, Welsh is a compulsory subject in all of Wales’ state schools for pupils aged 5–16 years old.
Llanelli has a good selection of schools from primary through to college. Additionally, it is home to Ysgol Heol Goffa a special school for children with disabilities.
According to SchoolGuide.co.uk, the three top-rated primary schools in the town are Ysgol Gymraeg Brynsierfel, Swiss Valley C.P. School, and Ysgol Gymraeg Dewi Sant.
The three top-rated secondaries are Olchfa School, Bishopston Comprehensive and Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr.
Gower College is in Swansea (11 miles). It provides a college education for many of the town’s further education students.
The large Swansea University has three faculties across its two campuses which are located on the coastline of Swansea Bay. It offers a diverse choice of degrees across a number of subjects.
Things to do in Llanelli
There is so much to do and see in and around the town for everyone. No one needs to complain about having “nothing to do” no matter their age or ability.
You can indulge in outdoor pursuits amid the region’s several National Parks. The Pembrokeshire Coast and Brecon Beacons are stunning as is the popular Coastal walk which cuts through Llanelli.
Llanelli Wetland Centre is a 450-acre mosaic of lakes, pools, streams, and lagoons adjoining the salt marshes and shore of the Burry Inlet. Packed with rare fauna and flora and its hands-on children’s activities make it an exciting site to visit.
Sport is at the heart of the Welsh nation, particularly rugby and each town has its own team. Llanelli’s rugby league club is called the West Wales Raiders. Based at the Stebonheath Park stadium, they play in the Rugby Football League’s League 1 competition.
Llanelly House is one of the most notable historic properties in Llanelli. An excellent example of an early-18th-century Georgian townhouse. It had been described as the most outstanding domestic building of its early Georgian type to survive in South Wales. Well worth exploring.
There are some excellent shopping opportunities too, with a good number of independent shops, a thriving traditional market hall and a selection of high street stores in the St Elli Shopping Centre. Of course, a day spent in Swansea is also not to be missed.
Miles of golden sandy beaches, medieval castles, craft shops, rolling hills, and world-class museums and designer shopping, are all close to the city.
Property prices
According to the latest figures released by the Government, the average cost of property in the UK is now £281,000.
Compare this figure to Llanelli’s average of £176,098 and you can see what fantastic value for money the town offers prospective buyers.
Although there is plenty of choices when it comes to property types, semi-detached houses make up the majority of the total housing stock and flats account for the lowest percentage.
Prices vary but you can expect to pay from £45,000 for a one-bedroom flat, £55,000 for a two-bedroom terraced home, and £90,000 for a larger three-bedroom family-sized property.
There are also plenty of high-end, character properties available. If your budget can stretch to £500,000, there is a prestigious detached residence for sale in Bynea, on the outskirts of the town. Set within an acre of land, it would make a spectacular family home.
