Colloquially known locally as Kingston, this southwest London town is located within the oldest Royal Borough in Greater London, notable for being the ancient market town in which Saxon kings were crowned.
Kingston was built at the first crossing point of the Thames upstream from London Bridge and a bridge still exists at the same site. One of South London’s best locations, as well as being within sight of central London.
Kingston is packed with beautiful homes, lots of open green areas and has access to an incredible range of shops. Travel
Kingston hasn’t got a local tube station, but you will find several rail stations close by, all of which are on the Southwest Trains route; you can be in Waterloo within 24 minutes.

Seven independent schools serve Kingston catering for all ages from 3-18 years. Kinston Grammar School can trace its roots back to at least the 13th century. The Good Schools Guide described the school as “An academic school with a modern edge”.
State Ofsted rated “outstanding” primary schools in the town include St Luke’s C of E Primary School, Fern Hill Primary School and Hampton Wick Infant and Nursery School with the majority of remaining primaries having been rated as “good”.
11-19 Age Range
The Kingston Academy for 11-19 years is a co-ed secondary, located in North Kingston not far from the River Thames. The school was set up by the Kingston Educational Trust, a partnership between Kingston University, Kingston College and Royal Borough of Kingston. It received “outstanding” inspection results across the board.
Children can progress to Kingston College. A large FE institution operating four colleges in south-west London collectively known as the South Thames College Group (STCG) who’s members are South Thames College, Kingston College, Merton College, and Carshalton College. As of 2020, STCG has over 5,300 students each on study and adult programmes.
Kingston University London is a public research university, its roots go back to the Kingston Technical Institute, founded in 1899. A well organised university, it has four campuses situated in Kingston. The university specialises in the arts, design, fashion, science, engineering, and business.
Things to do in Kingston upon Thames
Kingston has it all for a fun day out with the whole family and the choices are endless. The area has so many parks and green spaces as well as the River Thames, you can enjoy a whole day of fun without hardly spending a penny.
Once of the closest and among the most famous green areas close by is Bushy Park offering the ideal day out for nature lovers. The second largest of London’s Royal Parks, at 445 hectares it home to herds of deer, it has a children’s playground, regular cricket matches, a bowls club, a fishing club, tennis courts and much more.
Other parks in the area include Canbury Gardens, Fishponds Park, Victoria Recreation Ground and a little further out you will find Kew Gardens, all fabulous areas for everyone can enjoy.

Kingston upon Thames has been home to a bustling market for centuries with the oldest surviving records dating back to the early 1200s. Kingston’s historical market is still thriving today and has around 28 permanent stalls trading 7 days a week, 10am – 5pm.
The market area is also flanked by plenty of shops and is a social hub for the district. It is now pedestrianised so totally safe for a good wander. You will also find the Bentall Centre here, a large shopping mall set across four levels and home to plenty of well-known stores.
