Why Move to Huntingdon?
Huntingdon is a thriving, historical market town situated just 18 miles from Cambridge and 22 miles from Peterborough. The town sits on the river Great Ouse.
Having prospered successfully as a bridging point of the river Ouse, Huntingdon grew into a popular market town. In 1599, it was the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell. Another famous resident was the colourful politician, the 4th Earl of Sandwich who was the inventor of everybody’s favourite snack – ‘the Sandwich’
Huntingdon is very nicely placed at the junction of the A14 and the A1 main trunk roads. Huntingdon is also served by the main line route from London Kings Cross to Scotland and the capital can be reached in just over an hour by train. Rail links also connect to Stansted Airport, Cambridge, Lincoln, Birmingham and Nottingham. Both Luton and Stansted airports are within an hour’s drive from the town.
This quaint little market town has much to offer those who call it home. Huntingdon’s present-day street markets are part of the character of the town and held twice weekly. The pedestrianised centre gives shoppers a choice of national, independent and boutique shops. Currently the town is undergoing a major facelift with the ongoing redevelopment in several areas.
Another attraction is the well-priced housing and some great little villages surround the town such as Godmanchester, Hartford and Great Stukeley, all of which are popular with commuters.
Huntingdon Schools & Education
Finding a good school in Huntingdon does not pose too much of a problem. Within a two-mile radius there are ten primary schools! Most of these schools have been rated as good by Ofsted. Huntingdon Junior School is well above the national average in English, maths and science.
Three secondaries serve the town, with Spring Common Academy having been rated as “outstanding”, and Hinchingbrooke School and St Peters both being rated as “good”. Hinchingbrooke is regarded as the pick of the secondaries.
Further education provision is provided for by Huntingdonshire Regional College Hinchingbrooke School sixth-form college and St Peter’s Sixth Form.
Things to do in Huntingdon
Huntingdon has an abundance of open spaces to visit and plenty of river activities where you can take advantage of day fishing, bird watching, horse riding or simply walking through the peaceful country parks.
Another popular recreational activity takes place at Grafham Water. Here among other things, you can enjoy its purpose-built cycle track. With 10 miles of glorious traffic-free waterside trails, Grafham Water is Cambridgeshire’s prettiest and best kept secret.
Hinchingbrooke Country Park covers 170 acres of open grasslands, mature woodland and lakes. It is a great place to visit for everyone wishing to enjoy the great outdoors. There is a great mix of play areas, cafe, hard-surfaced and muddy paths, secluded woodlands and long grass all within a short walk.
For something a little different and exciting, try rally karting, gliding, ten-pin bowling, an afternoon at the races at Huntingdon Steeplechases or even hot-air ballooning! All these activities can be enjoyed in and around the town.
There is a calendar of cultural events to attend in and around Huntingdon such as The Secret Garden Party music festival. Held annually at Abbots Ripon 4 miles from Huntingdon, it has hosted some very well-known performers including Lilly Allen, Blondie, Grace Jones and Gorillaz.
Huntingdon Property
Having such high commuter interest means that Huntingdon has become a good place to invest in property. Even though prices have been pushed up in recent years, with the average price for a home hovering at around £319,000, it is still a saving compared to London, which has average house prices of around £658,000, almost double the value.
There are some very desirable Victorian and Georgian homes in the town, mainly at its centre. AS well as this, there are a range of new executive homes situated close to the train station in Scholars Avenue and Christie Drive.
As a guide, you will pay upward of £80,000 for a one bedroomed apartment, £125,000 for a terraced property and values start at £240,000 for a three bedroomed family home.
