As part of the suburban growth of London in the 20th century, Hornchurch significantly expanded and increased in population which at the last count was around 64,000.
Hornchurch enjoys a close-knit community and much of its social activity revolves around the Queen’s Theatre. Renowned for top shows and Christmas pantomimes, and part of the thriving local arts scene.
Popular with families for its affordable thirties’ semis and large executive homes. Families have plenty of space to entertain their children. The nearby Ingrebourne Valley Walk and Hornchurch Country Park are great places to let the little ones expend their energy.

Things to do in Hornchurch
The top venue in the town is the award-winning Queens Theatre. It was the recipient of the 2018 Clothworkers’ Theatre Award.
A competitive annual prize given to a regional producing theatre that has only ever been awarded five times. Showcasing the skills of a whole range of talented artists including technicians, female lighting experts, sound designers and many more who come together in making each show a complete success.
The Ingrebourne Valley Walk comprises of a varied and unique mixture of interlinked and partly overlapping green spaces. The walk includes habitats ranging from river, open water, grassland, ancient woodland and marshland. It also boasts one of the best viewpoints of London’s Skyline, from 11 metres above sea level.
Just a couple of miles from the town in Romford is Raphael Park. There is a large playground nearby where children can feed the ducks and swans and explore the wooded areas and pathways. A small kiosk offers a place to sit and take a break to enjoy some light refreshments.

Schools & Education
Most of the schools in the town perform well. There are several exceptional primaries including Scotts Primary School and Nelmes Primary, both awarded “outstanding” by Ofsted.
Among the best of the high schools in the area are Abbs Cross and The Campion School, the former has been rated as “outstanding” and the latter as “good” by Oftsed.
Children often end up in one of two colleges; Havering Sixth Form and Havering College. These also have very good reputations.
Property Prices in Hornchurch
This area is a popular one to look out for a family home, with affordable prices and lots of choice. There are a few period Georgian and Victorian properties to be found, but Hornchurch has an abundance of thirties semi-detached dwellings. Many of these homes have been upgraded and renovated and most come with good sized gardens.
The most expensive houses are in the Emerson Park area, where some properties have been knocked down to make way for large, gated mansions of the “footballers’ wives” type. Houses in Emerson Park start at about £750,000.
Bellway has submitted plans for a large housing project on the St George’s Hospital site just south of the town centre. The project includes 290 homes of varying sizes as well as the provision of some assisted purchase homes.
