Why Move to Hereford?
The cathedral city of Hereford is nestled in the renowned Wye Valley. Known for its breath taking backdrop of untouched landscapes and ancient woodlands.
Hereford is the historical capital city of Herefordshire, boasting one of the oldest and most magnificent Cathedrals in England, dating from 1079AD.
Although stunning, the city is not particularly known for its commuter links, which far from detracting from its appeal, makes for a real sense of community in the area.
This is a place which offers a safe, balanced pace of life within a town bursting with character and packed full of exciting things to do and see.
The town’s medieval centre has international importance. It boasts the award-winning “Mappa Mundi Centre”, housing the largest medieval map in the world and two of the most extensive Chained Libraries in existence.
Farming has played a major part in the history of the county of Herefordshire, and for many years the City of Hereford was the epicentre of this success.
Today business is still predominantly agricultural, and the area is famed for its cider and other natural produce. In recent years Engineering, Finance, IT and tourism-related work have increased drastically; all contributing to the city’s growing economy.
Sitting on the River Wye and close to the Welsh border, Hereford may be a little remote for commuters, but for those who do travel for work, Cardiff and Birmingham are both around a 90-minute drive away. By rail, Cardiff can be reached in just under an hour and Birmingham an hour and a half.
Retail in the town is centred around two main shopping areas, The Old Butter Market and Maylords shopping centres.
Both have a good selection of high-street brands as well as a great choice of coffee shops and restaurants. Both are ideal places to shop, eat and relax in historic Hereford.
Hereford Schools & Education
Schools in Herefordshire are another of the city’s selling points and there are plenty of great options for all ages.
For primaries, some of the best include Holmer CofE Academy and St Francis Xavier’s Primary School, both of which received an ‘Outstanding’ rating at their last Ofsted inspections.
For secondaries, Whitecross Hereford High School and The Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School have very good reputations.
For children with special needs requiring specific assistance, the Barrs Court School is an excellent choice.
Hereford is home to five colleges including The National School of Blacksmithing, the oldest established Blacksmithing college in the UK, also the largest facility for training smiths in Europe.
It is also home to The Royal National College for the Blind. One of the top colleges in Europe for blind and visually impaired students, and one of only two in Britain.
New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering (NMITE) is a new high education provider in Hereford. Focusing on Engineering but with an alternative approach to delivering qualifications within this sector. Although new, it is proving to be a popular choice for students living in the county.
No matter what stage your children are at with their education, Hereford provides top-quality choices.
