Following a planning review in 1956, Haverhill was targeted for expansion. This was primarily to resettle communities from London which had been devastated during the Second World War. Haverhill’s population expanded rapidly during this time and today has a population of around 22,000 in a borough of just over 100,000.
The relatively small-town centre is compact but busy. There are several cafes, eateries, and shops along with a number of well-known supermarkets nearby.
