Recorded in the Domesday book of 1086, the town of Gillingham in Kent, has an interesting and varied past. The town is believed to have been named after a local warlord called Gyllingas from the old English gyllan, meaning “to shout”. He rallied his troops into battle with blood-curdling cries.
Gillingham’s Royal Dockyard was once a centre for shipbuilding, one of which was Nelson’s vessel HMS Victory, built at the dockyard in the 1760s. At its height, thousands of workers were employed here. The other claim to fame is that the town is known for producing the famous Jubilee Clip (or hose clamp). To this day it is still being produced locally.
Gillingham has become a highly desirable place for London commuters to live and an investor hot spot due to the high number of students living in the area. Things to Do in Gillingham
The town is in a great position and able to offer masses of lively ways you can entertain yourself during your time off.
Capstone Farm Country Park, within the Kent Downs, occupies an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A former farm converted into a landscaped park and open-space area, covering over 114 hectares of land attracting thousands of visitors annually.
At Planet Ice, you are all set for a fun time. No need to be a professional, it is a great venue to spend a few hours getting the hang of ice skating. You can pre-book lessons, available for all ages. Plus, little ones can hold onto one of the cute ice penguins which help to steady wobbly beginners.
The Royal Engineers Museum is Kent’s only Designated collection. The collection is very large and contains many internationally significant objects. A real treat, the museum has all sorts of interesting displays. Highlights include 25 Victoria Crosses, Wellington’s map of Waterloo, Chard’s weapons from the Zulu War and the world’s first guided torpedo.
Buckmore Park Kart Circuit is an MSA approved outdoor kart racing track. Located in Chatham, the large 1,000m international circuit poses several twists and turns. All safety equipment is supplied, and all age ranges are catered for from 4years and up. Each age group has its own route and is monitored for safety reasons very rigorously.
