Why Move to Fakenham?
Fakenham is a historic and attractive Norfolk market town on the River Wensum, situated halfway between Norwich and Kings Lynn. In 1086 according to the Domesday Book, Fakenham had only 150 residents. Today this has grown to almost 9,000. Just 10 miles from the sea, the town is often referred to as the gateway to the North Norfolk coast.
Once voted as the UK’s 7th best place to live, Fakenham lies in one of those enviable central locations. Surrounded by very attractive countryside, easy access to the shoreline, and close to the city of Norwich, there is always something to do in your spare time.
The town is now most famous for the national hunt racecourse. Visitors flock to the Fakenham races from across the county and beyond to enjoy watching the thoroughbred race, particularly for the Easter Monday Fakenham races.
Since receiving its Market Charter way back in 1250, the town’s busy Thursday market still thrives. The Market Place is right in the centre of town, so you can enjoy lunch in one of the local cafes or restaurants nearby after shopping.
Recent investment in Fakenham has seen the town centre being renovated and pedestrianised. However, you can still find some pretty red-brick and flint facades that offer old-world charm.
There are plenty of great shops to keep you “shopping local”. Great independents such as Benbows the greengrocer and Papworth the butcher. These sit alongside large nationals. Tesco, Aldi, and Iceland are all here.
There is also a cinema, which has been in the same building since the 1930s, now showing the latest blockbusters.
Getting around by train is via the closest rail station in Kings’s Lynn, a journey of around 30 minutes, not exactly on your doorstep but it does have services into Cambridge in well under an hour. The town is connected by road via the A148, A140, and A1065 offering routes in all directions including Norwich 26 miles.
Although it is not a hugely modern location, this is exactly what makes Fakenham so appealing.
Fakenham Schools & Education
Education started in the town nearly 200 years ago.
The first school in the town was the National School for Boys which opened in 1839. The second, provided by the British School Society, was built in 1844. A National School for Girls followed in 1848.
Today, education within the town is provided for by four schools:
Duke of Lancaster Special School for the 5–16-year age group,
Fakenham Junior School 7-11 years
Fakenham Infant and Nursery School 3-7 years
Fakenham Academy 11-18 years
Parents who opt to enrol their children in private education will need to travel to Holt, 12 miles away. Greshams Independent School in Holt provides tuition to boys and girls from the age of two up to the Sixth Form level.
For Further Education, one of the closest colleges is the College of West Anglia in Kings Lynn, (23 miles).
Overall, the college has more than 10,000 students and 800 staff working and studying across four campuses in Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. Following its latest inspection, Ofsted rated it as a “good” college.
