    Why move to Essex?

Essex has fallen foul to various stereotypical associations over the years. Perhaps none higher in profile than that of the Reality TV show cast of TOWIE (The Only Way Is Essex).

Look beyond the glitz and the glamour of those showbiz types frequenting Brentwood’s Sugarhut night club however and you will find a county laden with history, culture and opportunity.

Essex offers a huge choice of bustling towns to relocate to as well as a range of stunning locations on the coast or amongst unspoilt countryside.

The region is blessed with a rich history and many interesting historical and cultural landmarks as well as Michelin star restaurants and more quant and cosy pubs than there are Sunday afternoons.

You won’t have time to get bored either. A plethora of festivals are held during the year, including the newly created Village Green Festival which takes place in Chalkwell Park in the popular seaside town of Southend-On-Sea.

Of course, a major draw for Essex is its excellent commuter credentials. Two train lines directly link the county to London with regular services to both Fenchurch Street and Liverpool Street taking around 45 minutes. London Southend airport also offers cheap flights to a huge number of destinations from Amsterdam to Barcelona.

    Working in Essex

The county of Essex is a great place to live and work. It has diverse mix of rural and urban economies which cover 1,300 square miles. From the Constable Country to the Thames Estuary and the M11 corridor to the traditional seaside resorts of Clacton and Walton.

The unemployment rate in Essex is slightly lower than the national average, with 3.8% of the population registered as unemployed, compared to 4.4% for the whole of England.

Essex has a reputation as being a commuter belt for the capital but the county boasts a range of of employment opportunities itself. It is home to over 50,000 businesses and provides well over 500,000 jobs, contributing more than £20 billion to the national economy.

Industry is largely limited to the south of the county, with the majority of the land elsewhere being designated as land for agriculture (75%).

Other businesses in the region include mechanical engineering, glassmaking and the service sector. Many very well-known companies are based across the county, including Marconi, Ford Motor Company and a number of insurance and financial services organisations.

    Essex Schools & Education

Essex offers an incredible variety of schools from nursery right through to university level.

Education is provided by three authorities: Essex County Council and the two unitary authorities, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock. There are over 500 primary schools and around 100 secondary schools provided by these authorities.

Some of the best schools in the county are Elm Hall Primary School in Witham, and St Thomas More’s Catholic Primary School in Colchester. They are popular choices and have both been given glowing Ofsted reports.

Very reputable secondary schools include Burnt Mill Comprehensive School in Harlow, the Newbridge School in Romford, and The Fitzwimarc School in Rayleigh. There is also an abundance of independent, private, grammar and boarding schools.

For higher education, the University of Essex offers a multitude of different courses. There are also campuses for the Anglia Ruskin University and the University Campus Suffolk in and around the county that collaborate with the University of Essex.

    Living in Essex

Consisting of twelve districts, most residents live in one of Essex’s four main towns:

    • Basildon (recently appearing in the BBC hit show Killing Eve)
    • Chelmsford (designated as a city following the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations)
    • Colchester (the oldest town in the UK), and
    • Harlow (voted one of the best towns in the UK for commuters)

Colchester is one of the fastest growing towns in the UK and lays claim to being the birthplace of the famous nursery rhyme ‘Humpty Dumpty’.

However, unlike this egg-shelled former resident the only fall you’ll be experiencing if you move to Essex is in daily living costs, with the cost of living substantially lower than that of the capital.

For days out with kids, Colchester Zoo is a must and there are also lots of great farms such as Old McDonalds Farm in Brentwood or the Sealife Adventure Aquarium in Southend.

The city of Chelmsford is one of the most popular choices for those families wanting to commute to the capital for work but reside somewhere with a great community feel and open green spaces.

Chelmsford also caters well for shopaholics with a well populated high street and two sizeable shopping centres in the form of The Meadows and High Chelmer. There is also interesting selection of independent stores and boutiques.

For even more retail choice, Thurrock’s, Lakeside Shopping Centre, boasts over 250 different shops and boutiques as well as a multiplex cinema and various dining outlets.

If you are interested in experiencing Norman British life, then Mountfitchet Castle is a great day out. There is also over 300 years’ worth of history to learn about at the Royal Gunpowder Mill in Waltham Abbey, a stunning leafy area in the Epping Forest District.
