Why Move to Ely?
A small city but none the less it is one of the most visited in the UK due to its magnificent and ancient cathedral. Ely in the affluent county of Cambridgeshire makes a very attractive location to live indeed. Nicely sitting amid East Cambridgeshire’s unique countryside, it offers a very enviable lifestyle close to not just green areas but also waterside locations too with the meandering Great River Ouse flowing through the city.
However, Ely is not just a pretty place it is also in a very opportune position offering direct rail connections to London, Cambridge and as far as the Midlands.
One more benefit of living here is that the city has half the number of crimes reported compared to the county’s average as a whole, making it a very safe place to reside.
According to historical records, Oliver Cromwell, along with his family lived in the city for around 10 years. For those interested in local history, you can visit his house which is now a museum dedicated to his time here.
Another snippet of trivia is that the city was once surrounded by water and marshland which was teeming with eels. The annual Eel Festival celebrates this with several bizarre rituals such as eel throwing, whilst the local pubs and restaurants serve cooked eel dishes in tribute.
Ely has another surprise up its sleeve. Although it is known as an upmarket location its property prices are actually very reasonable with the average home costing £315,260.
Amenities are more than adequate. Head into Ely city centre and you’ll find a variety of national chain stores and charming independent retailers. The local produce market is held twice weekly complemented by a craft market held on Saturdays.
There really is no need to travel far from Ely for anything as the city provides all you need.
