Why Move to East Lothian?
East Lothian is not generally one of the first places which springs to mind when you think of Scotland. Although it does not receive the same level of praise and publicity as Glasgow, Edinburgh or Aberdeen, it is still sitting among some of the most spectacular landscapes in Scotland.
The county is also known as Scotland’s golf coast – and it is a very apt name. Not only does the area have good weather, but it boasts some first-class golf courses, including the current home of the Scottish Open, Gullane Golf Course.
Up until 1921, East Lothian was known as Haddingtonshire. Historically, Haddingtonshire was heavily involved in several medieval and early modern conflicts and several fortified castles and buildings such as Dunbar Castle, Tantallon Castle and Dirleton Castle date from this period.

East Lothian has a good assortment of schools across the county, including six state secondaries: Dunbar Grammar School, Knox Academy in Haddington, Musselburgh Grammar School, North Berwick High School, Preston Lodge High School in Prestonpans and Ross High School in Tranent.
There are two independent schools in the county. Loretto School is a day and boarding school in Musselburgh founded in 1827 and Belhaven Hill School, established in 1923 is a smaller preparatory school in Dunbar also providing boarding.
In 2007, Queen Margaret University began its move to a new, purpose-built campus in Musselburgh within East Lothian, providing it with its first university.

The thriving community of Musselburgh, located on the banks of the River Esk residents have adequate amenities to meet every day needs including shops, supermarkets, banks, and a post office. Whilst recreational needs are well provided for too with a leisure centre, parks and a variety of bars and restaurants. You can budget for an average of £271,000 for a home here.
Haddington is very attractive, a relatively small town but it lays close to the coast and has access to countryside as well. Living here provides excellent schooling from primary through to secondary education and numerous well-known supermarkets along with other popular High Street shops. Property is more expensive with an average cost of £310,000.
One of the most in demand locations is on the west side of the popular seaside town of North Berwick. Buyers can look forward to homes offering outstanding sea views of the island of Craigleith and the Firth of Forth with Fife beyond. Not cheap, detached homes in this location sell for around £500,000.
Other villages to consider are Dunbar. A coastal town in East Lothian and is well known in the region because of its golden beaches.
Rich with history East Linton has maintained all of its old architecture. A picturesque village situated on the river Tynes and is believed to have grown because of a 16th century bridge built on the Tyne gorge.
