The largest town in South Lanarkshire, East Kilbride was one of Scotland’s first “New Towns”. Built as an alternative solution to the overcrowding conditions residents were experiencing in 1947 following WW2. East Kilbride has since gone on to become one of the most successful new towns in Scotland.

Nicely bordered by some very lovely countryside which offers a range of welcome spaces for recreational purposes. There is a variety of parks dotted throughout the town.
Calderglen Country Park has a choice of woodland walks and contains the ruins of both Calderglen Castle and Craigneith Castle.

One of the main attractions for residents is East Kilbride’s handy location. It sits just 8 miles from the city of Glasgow and just under an hour’s car journey (47 miles) from the capital of Edinburgh. A continually expanding centre for retail, property and business ensures the town is a busy one economically. There are many high-tech industries and globally renowned companies such as Coca-Cola, Rolls Royce and Burns Stewart Whisky Distillers in the region.

For shopping, the East Kilbride Shopping Centre, is the area’s largest undercover shopping complex. Home to around 180 shops including catering and leisure outlets.

Whilst ‘The Village’, the oldest part of East Kilbride, is home to a variety of quaint independents, restaurants, cafes, and pubs. East Kilbride offers so much, great amenities, fast connections to plenty of places in the region and enough going on recreationally to keep everyone happy.

East Kilbride Schools & Education

Moving to a new area and having to find a good school for your children can be stressful.

It is good to know that in East Kilbride there are some particularly good education options.

With at least 6 pre-school centres and around 24 primary schools spread across the town education provision for the youngest children is well catered for.

Education Scotland is the Scottish Governments education watchdog and following their most recent inspections in 2019, Mount Cameron Primary School and St Hilary’s Primary School were found to be “good” with some “very Good” aspects.

One of the largest secondaries in the town, in fact in the county, is Calderglen High School.
A state-run secondary school situated in the St Leonards area. The school has around 1800 students enrolling each year. The well-known TV presenter Lorraine Kelly was a former pupil.

There are also several community education centres and establishments to meet the needs of those with special educational requirements.

Calderglen High shares a campus with Sanderson High School, a special school catering to students with learning difficulties.

FE provision is via South Lanarkshire College. The college offers a range of courses which cover most career-focused qualifications.
