Wiltshire’s hidden gem Devizes is an incredibly interesting market town which has in the past been named as the fourth best place to live in the UK! The town is named after the Latin ‘ad devizas’ meaning ‘at the boundaries and it developed around a Norman castle built by Osmund Bishop of Salisbury in 1080 at the boundary of three Saxon parishes.
Packed with over 500 listed buildings centring around a beautiful marketplace area which is the main focus of the town. It’s the perfect location with regards to world renowned entertainment.
The market Square is a bustling hive of activity. Home to most of the town’s many coffee shops, restaurants, shops, pubs as well as the indoor market. There are many independent boutiques to discover downside little streets and alleyways, all of which give the town a quaint, historic feel.
Newcomers can look forward to a very community conscious town which is host to an array of events even a much larger town would be proud of. The International Street Festival sees a fantastic programme welcoming some of the best street performers, contemporary circus acts, dancers, musicians, and walkabout shows from UK and Europe.
Although Devizes is around 15 miles from the M4, several smaller main roads pass through the town, including the A360, A361 and A342. The closest railway stations are at Melksham, Chippenham and Pewsey offering services up and down the region.
Devizes has very good bus connections to surrounding towns and as a handy extra, it has a daily National Express coach service to and from London Victoria, via Heathrow Airport.
There is a regular bus service to and from Stonehenge. So, getting around is not too tiresome.
The cherry on the top for this wonderful town is that schools are of an excellent standard with all but one rated as “good” by Ofsted. It is fair to say that Devizes doesn’t just merely “cover the basics” when it comes to finding your forever home, it absolutely smashes it!
Devizes Schools & Education
Not only is being near a good school one of the top pre-requisites for those moving with children, but homes in well rated school zones are also in higher demand for buyers and fetch higher resale prices.

Primaries performing particularly well are St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Devizes, Southbroom Infants’ School and The Trinity Church of England Primary Academy.
Devizes School is a mixed comprehensive for young people aged 11 to 18. The school is the only secondary in the town, and it also serves many surrounding villages.
Dauntsey’s School is situated 6 miles from Devizes, it is the closest private school to the town. A co-ed independent boarding and day school in West Lavington, Dauntsey’s provides an excellent all-round secondary education for boys and girls aged 11-18.
Things to do in Devizes
Devizes provides a veritable playground for its residents when it comes to the entertainment factor.
There is so much to see in the town, outside the town and throughout the county of Wiltshire.
Get on the water. Bisected by the Kennet & Avon canal, which forms a length of waterway joining London to Bristol, and just a few minutes from the town by foot. An engineering and aesthetic marvel it has no less than twenty-nine locks. Ideal for boating, canoeing, fishing and just to walk alongside.
The mighty chalk downs are full of ancient byways and prehistoric earthworks providing a scenic playground for walkers and cyclists alike and the views along the way are stunning.
The iconic Cherhill White Horse can be seen for miles around and is one of only eight chalk white horses in Wiltshire. The second oldest, it was made under the guidance of Dr Christopher Alsop of Calne in 1780, now a popular stop off point with walkers on the downs.
Wadworth Brewery as yet another popular attraction. Sample their famous 6X and meet the Shire horses that still deliver to pubs in the town. Boasting a free self-guided exhibition of brewing memorabilia, a unique collection of hand painted pub signs, and much more, there really is more to Wadworth than meets the eye.
Wiltshire Heritage Museum is hosted in a very attractive building in Devizes. Its collections are designated as being of National Significance and are a unique resource for those researching the archaeology, history, art, or natural history of Wiltshire. The museum is home to a huge number of interesting exhibits and well worth visiting.

Devizes Property
For a town the size of Devizes, the local property market is surprisingly active.
