Why Move to Cumbernauld
Cumbernauld is positioned in the middle of Scotland’s Central Belt, which stretches from Glasgow in the west to Edinburgh in the east and contains the majority of the Scottish population.
Appointed to deal with overcrowded conditions in Glasgow, Cumbernauld was chosen as the site for a New Town on 9 December 1955. This led to rapid expansion and building for about 40 years until the town became established as the largest in North Lanarkshire.
Careful planning ensured that the town consists of more than 50% green space. Local nature reserves and parks were designed as a resource for the whole community to use and enjoy. As a result, the town has won many awards for its local flower displays which adorn these natural areas.
Cumbernauld has many links to nearby motorways offering access to Glasgow, Stirling, Falkirk, Dunfermline, and St Andrews. Complementary to road links, these towns plus lots of others can also be reached by either Cumbernauld or Croy railway stations.
Having evolved into a modern town awash with contemporary infrastructure, Cumbernauld more than provides its residents with all necessary amenities.
Schools, churches, retail outlets, supermarkets, and other basic facilities are dotted about the area. The town is also host to several fantastic restaurants, perfect for foodies.
Though predominantly a family-friendly location, Cumbernauld also makes a perfect base for young professionals who can take advantage of its quick 20-minute commute into Glasgow.
Schools & Education
When it comes to a successful relocation, finding the right school is often ‘make or break’.
Doing some thorough research beforehand is a valuable tip, particularly so if you are moving from the UK to Scotland as the educational system is not the same.
Scotland has a long history of universal public education and similar to Ofsted, standards are assessed by Education Scotland, the Scottish Governments education watchdog.
The borough has sixteen primaries which feed into four state secondary schools. The three primaries closest to the town centre are Eastfield Primary School, St Mary’s Primary School and Cumbernauld Primary School.
The four local secondaries are Our Lady’s High School, St Maurice’s High School and Greenfaulds High School and Cumbernauld Academy.
Special needs education is provided by two schools Glencryan School and Redburn School.
New College Lanarkshire (formerly Cumbernauld College) is a relatively new college it has six campuses one of which is in Cumbernauld.
It was created in November 2013 from the merger of Cumbernauld College and Motherwell College, and in 2014 it absorbed Coatbridge College. A large institution with over 25,000 students.
