Once a very small country village, originally in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Birmingham Jr, Cannock in the county of Staffordshire, saw great changes during the mid-19th Century.
The beginning of the coal mining era launched its reputation as one of the leaders in the mining industry.
Accessibility is always a bonus for any town. Since the M6 Toll opening in 2003 Cannock is now one of the country’s fastest-growing residential and commercial areas.

Sitting on the fringe of ‘Cannock Chase’ a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the town’s inhabitants are fortunate enough to enjoy a peaceful small-town feel.
An outdoorsy lifestyle is the norm, whilst the advantage of being able to access the City of Birmingham, the town of Walsall and Lichfield Cathedral City makes a cultural hit totally possible.
There is a good assortment of places to shop. As each of Cannock’s suburbs were once individual villages, they still retain their own high streets. This negates the need to travel far for day-to-day necessities.
Education is of a high standard across the county and offers plenty of choices.
The Cannock Chase Hospital has recently been refurbished at a cost of £27 million and provides comprehensive healthcare to the local population. With its close-knit community feels but modern amenities associated with a much larger town, Cannock is as practical as it is attractive.
Cannock Schools & Education
The county of Staffordshire benefits from some excellent state and independent schools.
There more than twenty primary schools and ten secondary schools and several colleges in the area, ensuring that children of all ages and stages of education have the absolute best opportunities available to them. Many of Cannock’s schools have been recognised for their high-achieving exam pass rates.
Ofsted rated “outstanding” schools include, the primaries of St Joseph and St Theresa Catholic Primary and Watling Street Primary School.
Whilst there are no outstanding secondaries within a two-mile radius of Cannock, there are plenty of “good” rated ones, Norton Canes High School and Erasmus Darwin Academy were both “good” says Ofsted.
The local independent grammar school, Chase Grammar, has been at the top of the county league tables for over a decade, even appearing in the list of Top 100 Schools in the UK in recent years.
Although there are several FE providers in the area, the closest is South Staffordshire College, it has a campus in Cannock. Applicants to the college have all sorts of subjects and courses to choose from for both school leavers and adults.
Things to do in Cannock
Whether your interests lie in outdoor or indoor pursuits, Cannock provides all manner of entertainment prospects.
Cannock Chase Forest – An area of scenic natural beauty laden with leisurely walks and cycle tracks.
The Museum of Cannock Chase – tells the fascinating story of Cannock Chase, from its industrial beginnings to its military role, famous local citizens, social history, domestic life, and wildlife.
Chasewater Country Park – a popular public amenity with activities such as water-skiing, sailing, wakeboarding, and cycling. Chasewater is the third largest reservoir by volume in the county of Staffordshire
Cannock Chase – (better known to the locals as The Chase). The area has been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is a wonderful combination of woodland and open country. This a place you can visit at any time of the year
The regular well-attended town centre market has been running since the 13th century. Featuring 61 stalls, it is positioned in the shadow of the elegant Stafford Town Hall.
The town also boasts The Queens Retail Park and Riverside shopping centre, which include outlets such as Next, New Look, Marks and Spencer, and H&M.
Stafford Castle spans over 900 years of history. Its original motte and bailey castle topped with the ruins of the 19th-century castle.
Alternatively, you can be in Birmingham in just 30 minutes by car or 45 minutes by train. The City offers a host of things to do, an unmissable shopping experience, a plethora of bars and restaurants as well as a thriving nightlife.
Cannock Property
The town offers not only offers buyers superb value for money it also has a variety of property types many of which are semi-detached.
There are some genuinely nice Victorian-era terraces as well as some recent new build developments to choose from.
Norton Canes, Heather Valley, and Dursely Drive are desirable areas and command the highest prices. In these neighbourhood’s property starts at around £412,000.
There are 181 homes for sale and the average cost is currently £210,812.
If you are looking to rent, you can expect to pay upwards of £850 per month for a 3 bedroomed home and around £480 per month for a one bedroomed apartment.
