Billingham is a town just north of the River Tees, in the borough of Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham in Northeast England.
Founded circa 650 by a group of Angles (one of the main Germanic peoples who settled in Great Britain in the post-Roman period) known as Billa’s people, which is where the name Billingham is thought to have originated.
A bustling and convenient place to shop and relax, with over 70 businesses including national retailers, small independent shops and a number of cafes and restaurants, all situated in a recently refurbished pedestrian shopping area. There is also lively outdoor market every Monday and Friday.
It is easy to find places of interest in and around Billingham.
There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature at Billingham Beck Valley Country Park plus several other beauty spots perfect for a picnic or just to explore and get out into the open air.
Located nearby are the larger towns of Middlesbrough and Stockton on Tees, whilst its just 30 minutes by car to Sunderland and Durham. By rail you can reach the city of Newcastle within 40 minutes plus a number of other regional destinations too.

Schools & Education

Billingham’s education provision is impressive for its size and much investment in its schools has been made in recent years.
You will find seven state primary schools within a one-mile radius of the town.
Of these, five are deemed “good” whilst Crooksbarn Primary School and St Paul’s Catholic Primary School are both “outstanding” says Ofsted.
Our Lady & St. Bede Catholic Academy is the only “outstanding” secondary in the town according to Ofsted, however, the remaining six closest state secondaries are all “good”.
There is plenty of choice with regard to independent education as well and Billingham and its surrounding areas is home to no less than five private schools catering for children of all ages.
Bede Sixth Form College offers a variety of A level and A level equivalent courses along with full-time opportunities in Sport and Public Services. It was established in 1972, following a reorganisation of various schools on the Billingham Campus site.

The town is effectively split into two separate areas by name, Old Billingham (the area around the village green adjacent to St Cuthbert’s church and built up around the ICI works) and the more planned estates that have spread out since the 1950s.
Each area has its own merits, and depending on your personal style and budget, Billingham manages to fulfil everyone’s requirements.
For quieter neighbourhoods, the surrounding villages of Wolviston with its traditional Village Green and a Duck Pond and the pretty village of Cowpen Bewley are both sought after locations.
