Why Move to Bideford
Bideford, also known as ‘The Little White Town ‘, is both a Port and Market town, located on the west bank of the River Torridge within the beautiful county of Devon. Plenty of people choose to move to this region of the UK, often having holidayed in one of the well-known towns and villages in the county.
It certainly offers a slower pace of life, and you are never far from the coast or the beautiful countryside, including Dartmoor and Exmoor. Another attraction of this region is the cost of living, especially if you are moving from a large city like London. Housing is not only much cheaper but, generally more spacious inside and out.
The first mention of Bideford in the history books was regarding its Quay in 1619. Sir Walter Raleigh landed his first shipment of tobacco here and as the ship-building trade boomed, the Quay was developing quickly. Although no longer a busy port, a handful of fishing boats still run out of Bideford today.
The town has various shops in its lively centre which create an enticing high street experience, complemented by authentic pubs and restaurants. There are several interesting antique shops scattered amongst its narrow backstreets and alleyways, ideal for a leisurely meander in winter or summer.
Not one of the most well connected towns in the area, residents need to travel some way to arrive at major towns and cities in the area. However, this does not in any way deter buyers who are searching for an abode away from built-up locations.
Served by the A39 Atlantic Highway and A386 roads, Exmouth is 58 miles away and Plymouth 55 miles. The nearest railway station is at Barnstaple (7 miles away) and has regular services to other larger towns and cities in the region.
Although outwardly the town has changed little for many years and is a huge part of its charm, it has still undergone some enhancements. The new quay area is particularly beautiful by night with its perennial chains of streetlights reminiscent of riverside towns in France.
Bideford manages to tick a multitude of boxes most of us are looking for when buying a home in a quiet coastal location.
Schools & Education
Relocating to a new town to live with your family presents its challenges; trying to choose the best place to live and finding good schools too, can feel overwhelming.

The college is proud of the broad and balanced curriculum that it offers its students in both the main school and the sixth form. It offers the potential to develop a range of academic and vocational skills that prepares young people for careers in the 21st century.
