Why Move to Berkshire?
The home counties are the counties of England that surround London. The Royal County of Berkshire is one of these. Berkshire is filled with history, great connections to London as well as a whole host of other modern and convenient amenities and attractions.
The county is synonymous with horse racing.
Ascot Racecourse is used for thoroughbred horse racing and Berkshire hosts more Group 1 flat horse races than any other county in England. The course is very closely associated with the British Royal Family, being approximately 6 miles from Windsor Castle, and owned by the Crown Estate. Windsor Castle is also located in Berkshire. If this wonderful county is good enough for the Queen, who can argue with that?
This county is a huge favourite with families. Lots of open space and great schools alongside a commute into the capital which is not too long, in places less than 30 minutes.
Whether it is a tranquil picture box village ideal for retiring to, or somewhere such as Maidenhead or Reading which offers a buzzing social scene perfect for younger folk, Berkshire has a location for you.
Though there are pockets where you can pay exorbitant sums of money for a home, some areas offer properties whose values are well within the reach of most. If you travel abroad for work purposes, or you just like to get away on a regular basis, Heathrow and Gatwick airports serve this county, making light work of overseas travel.
The M4 which runs through the centre of the county ensures you can reach practically anywhere locally and UK wide. Much of the Berkshire area is a designated ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ known as ‘North Wessex Downs’. An unspoilt area with big skies and stunning views. Also, easy to reach are the River Kennet and the Kennet and Avon Canal, leaving you with plenty of options to enjoy the county’s natural open spaces.
Berkshire has been sighted in both the Halifax and the UK Quality of Life Index’s as one of the UK’s best places to live. For country life well within reach of London, Berkshire is hard to beat.

Reading has a historical involvement in the information technology industry. Microsoft and Oracle have established multi-building campuses on the outskirts of the town.
Other technology companies with a presence in Reading include Huawei Technologies, Agilent Technologies, Bang & Olufsen and Virgin Media.
Slough is another great area to search for work, It too has some very notable names present. Recent new offices include those of Nintendo and Black and Decker.
Plus, Heathrow airport employs a huge number of local residents from Slough.
In Newbury, Vodafone is a major employer. Their purpose-built campus is located on the outskirts of Newbury and sits within a 30-acre site and includes 7 buildings and a lake and nicely connected by road or rail.

Berkshire Schools & Education
Though property prices are of course incredibly important, another issue if you have children, and equally as pressing is education provision. There are many impressive schools, both private and state, within the counties border performing to exemplary levels.
Arguably one of the most is the remarkably prestigious school, Eton College for boys. Founded in 1440 by Henry VI, Boris Johnson is one among many former pupils.
Other highly rated independent schools are Ludgrove School in Wokingham and Wellington College in Crowthorne.
When it comes to state education, Berkshire is home to an overall 89 outstanding schools and 236 good schools, as rated by Ofsted.
Once you have decided where you are relocating to, you can go to the Education section on the Government website.
From here you can check how well any Berkshire school is performing very quickly.
As a further guide, BerkshireLive has compiled a helpful list of schools in the region which Ofsted have already rated as “outstanding”: (www.getreading.co.uk/news/reading-berkshire-news/45-outstanding-ofsted-berkshire-schools-19253187)
With primary to secondary education well provided for, what can you expect from further education: There is a good choice for the 16–18-year age group.
Newbury College, Reading College, and Berkshire Collee of Agriculture are just a few of the FE colleges available and offering an incredible number of courses at all levels.
A number of universities are in Berkshire, the University of Reading (which includes the Henley Business School), Imperial College (Silwood Park Campus), and the University of West London. These establishments combine to provide higher education, part, or full time, to both the counties college leavers and to thousands of adult learners.

Berkshire Property
Affordability will always be one of the most important factors to take into consideration when preparing to relocate.
Not surprisingly considering how close you are to London, homes across many areas of Berkshire are expensive.
Another phenomenon caused by the pandemic is that as more people can and do now work from home, there is less of a need to live in the capital and fork out the huge sums of money required to own or rent a property there.
In the past 18 months thousands of escaping London have relocated to Berkshire, the highest number for many years. So, what are you likely to have to spend on a home in Berkshire?
Close to London, in and around places such as Ascot, Sunningdale, Windsor and Maidenhead, prices are very expensive. Averages in these locations start at £650,000, way over the national average.
Areas to consider if you need your money to stretch a little further are Compton, Bracknell, and Lambourn. Here averages start at around £332,000.
It is also an excellent county for more recently built homes of good proportions including some new builds in either classic or contemporary style.
According to Zoopla, Berkshire has 29 New Build Developments either completed or under construction. Many of these homes have a range of help to buy initiatives.
