A small town with a population of around 50,000, Benfleet has a rich and vibrant history. Parts of Benfleet are built on a range of low hills, topped by the ruins of Hadleigh Castle.
Hadleigh Castle is an ancient monument, forming the most important historic site in the Borough and the most important late medieval castle in Essex. In 894AD the Battle of Benfleet was fought and won here, between the Vikings and Saxons.
Today, this fascinating little town is home to several local shops including local convenience stores, dry cleaners, take away food outlets, hair and beauty salons as well as banks with cashpoints. However, for a broader choice, there are also larger shopping centres in nearby Southend and Basildon, as well as many retail parks on the outskirts of the towns.
Newcomers to Benfleet will find plenty of clubs and societies to join. There is a variety of sports clubs to choose from including South Benfleet Bowling Club, a local running club, Boyce Hill Golf club and also several football and cricket clubs for both adults and children.

Things to do in Benfleet
There is no shortage of things to do to fill your downtime here, in and around Benfleet.
The well-known Canvey Island is located in the River Thames estuary off the coast of Essex, a journey of around 3½ miles. It has several lovely beaches, a funfair and a water sports complex great for all the family.
For nature lovers, the RSPB site, Bowers Marsh, is an ancient landscape alive with the sights and sounds of wildlife situated between Benfleet and Pitsea. After a series of restoration projects, there are 4 miles of nature trails to explore on foot, three viewing points and two picnic areas.
Hadleigh Castle was built after 1215 during the reign of Henry III. It is an exciting visitor attraction. Today, just the ruins remain, however, this is still a popular place to visit and to learn more of the castles past and its royal inhabitants.
Farmer Fred’s Play Barn is a must for active younger children. Its play zone area has lots of slides and climbing apparatus, ball pits and climbing ropes. It also has a snack bar which is superb for a coffee or a light lunch and a mum’s get together while the little ones enjoy themselves.

Well serviced with regard to education provision. Benfleet has 35 pre-schools, nurseries, primary and secondary schools. Of these, 16 are primaries and 3 are secondaries.
Ofsted rated many primaries as “outstanding”, including; Kents Hill Infant School and The Robert Drake Primary School.
Of the secondaries, Ofsted reported that the Deanes School “requires improvement”, The Kings School was rated as “good” and the Appleton School was awarded an “outstanding”.
The closest college to the town is Seevic College. A further education college located in Thundersley, Benfleet, with a second campus (New Campus Basildon) in Basildon. Approximately 2500 students attend the college, with a provision of adult education courses for learners of any age.
