Why Move to Bedfordshire?
Bedfordshire is a stunning county which shares its borders with Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Buckinghamshire, and Northamptonshire. Consisting of 15 towns (Luton being the largest) and 87 villages, there are no cities in the county. With its central position, excellent travel links and even its own airport for sunshine getaways, the quieter parts of Bedfordshire have not gone unnoticed by London commuters.
Both the East Coast Mainline and Thameslink rail service run through the county into Kings Cross as do the M1, A1, A5 and A6 making it very well connected indeed. For some of the county’s southerly towns, our capital city is a commutable distance away; Luton is just a 25-minute journey by train, absolutely ideal.
Recreationally, the Marston Vales and Chiltern Hills are just a couple of the many incredible areas of breath-taking countryside within Bedfordshire’s borders.
Top businesses are basing themselves within the county; Autoglass, EasyJet, Monarch Airlines, Whitbread and Jordans Cereals all have either their headquarters or large bases in the here. It is also a great place to bring up a family with plenty of child friendly attractions available such as Whipsnade Zoo and Woburn Safari Park.
If history is more to your liking, then there are the wonderful quaint towns like Wood End and Stagsden, close to some exceptional stately homes and gardens like Woburn Abbey.
Home to a diverse population Bedfordshire is a melting pot when it comes to ethnicity. Many people of Italian, Eastern European, and Asian descent have settled in its towns and villages.
If you want to live somewhere with an easy commute, reasonable property prices and without sacrificing your love of green spaces, then head for Bedfordshire.
Bedfordshire Schools & Education
The county offers a broad range of education which is largely run by Bedford County Council with a few exceptions. There are around 56 state funded lower schools (primaries) and 13 secondaries covering Bedfordshire.
Of the primaries, the following received “outstanding” results following their latest Ofsted inspections; Fairfield Park Lower School, Roecroft Lower School and Dovery Down Lower School.
One of the best state funded secondaries and reported by Ofsted as being “outstanding” is Lark Rise Academy with Gilbert Inglefield Academy being awarded a rating of “good”.
There are a number of independent schools to choose from; Bedford School for boys, Bedford Modern School (co-educational), Bedford Girls’ School and Pilgrims Pre-Preparatory School (co-educational), all are highly regarded.
Higher education is provided for by two universities based in the county, the University of Bedfordshire and Cranfield University. These institutions attract students from all over the UK and abroad, as well as from Bedfordshire
For more information on schools across Bedfordshire and how they are performing, visit the government website here.
