Why move to Axminster?
Just seven miles from the picturesque Devonshire coastline, Axminster is set on the River Axe within the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
It’s sleepy traditional charm and character has made it a firm favourite among retirees and relocating families alike:
Located just a few miles from the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, Axminster boasts all the benefits that come with countryside dwelling: uncrowded local services, stunning green open spaces and cosy pubs.
The town was made famous by carpets. First made by Thomas Whitty in 1755, at one point in history the town’s bell would chime every time a new carpet was rolled.
The population of Axminster is older than the national average, as well as the Devon average.
Excellent local commuter credentials with rail links to Exeter, Wiltshire, Salisbury and Yeovil.
Celebrity chef and TV presenter, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall lives in a 60-acre farm in the Axe valley, which features on many of his shows.
Schools & Education
According to the Office for National Statistics Axminster has a higher number of residents holding a higher education qualification (level 4) than the national average.
The town also has several good local schools to choose from. Ofsted has rated the primaries of Kilmington and St Marys Catholic as “good”. Highly regarded secondaries in the area are Axe Valley Community College and Colyton Grammar.

Some of the best areas of natural beauty in the UK are a stone’s throw away. To the north are the Blackdown Hills, to the east is Cranborne Chase and north west of the town is Exmoor National Park. All of these sites are incredibly popular and receive thousands of visitors each year.
A great place to take the family for a day out is Axe Valley Park, a compact child-friendly zoos where children can get up close and personal with animals including, lemurs, otters, meerkats, reptiles and even wallabies from Australia!
For those interested in local history, the Axminster museum is an ideal day out.
The museum is housed in the Old Courthouse, Church Street and exhibits collections that range from traditional agricultural tools and archaeology to old photographs and details of carpet making.
