Historically part of Cheshire, Altrincham was established as a market town in 1290. The town began to expand rapidly with the arrival of the Bridgewater Canal extension, followed by the arrival of the railway in 1849.
Today Altrincham is part of the county of Greater Manchester. It has a population of around 53,000 and has become a popular and affluent commuter town with some great transport links at its disposal.
The town lies just eight miles southwest of Manchester, 15 miles from Macclesfield and 10 miles east of Warrington.
Travelling further afield? The M6 is only 20 minutes allowing connections to Birmingham and London to the South, and Lancaster and the Lake District to the North.
This peaceful leafy town has various green spaces nearby such as the award-winning Samford Park, the National Trust’s Dunham Massey Park, and Tatton Park, all great for walks and other weekend activities.

Town Improvements
The town has been undergoing a number of ambitious regeneration projects.

Best state secondaries in Altrincham are Altrincham Grammar School for Girls, Altrincham Grammar School for Boys and Brentwood School (an independent school). Ofsted has rated them all as “outstanding”.
For further and higher education nearby Manchester is hard to beat.
Home to four well-regarded universities; the University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, Royal Northern College of Music, and the Victoria University of Manchester.
Things to do in Altrincham
The town provides residents and visitors with a variety of both indoor and outdoor pursuits within the town and more in the wider region.
Altrincham Garrick Playhouse: Fancy a night at the theatre? There’s no need to leave the town for that. The playhouse hosts an exciting array of shows and productions. Comedy, musicals, drama, and thrillers, to name a few.
Samford Park: A great place for everyone to spend time. Nature walks, play areas, sports fields, a blowing green, and more are to be found on the 16-acre public park in the middle of town.
Dunham Massey Hall & Park: A Grade I Listed building now owned by the National Trust. Construction began on the beautiful building during the early 17th century but it was some time before it was completed.
There are plenty of intriguing artefacts and information on view surrounding the people who lived here. A walk in the extensive grounds is a must.
Altrincham Ice Rink: A popular attraction, the rink provides residents with a number of exciting things to do and see. Skating lessons are available, birthday parties are catered for, pantomimes are held on the ice and of course, it is home to the Manchester Storm Hockey Team.
Altrincham Golf Club: One of the most popular 18-hole golf courses in the Northwest. The club has a stunning course, and a driving range complete with ball-tracking technology, a number of competitions are held throughout the year and there is a small club room for a little drink after the game.
Fletcher Moss Botanical Gardens: Just outside of the town, this historic park provides a green oasis for all to enjoy. The location has been used on some well-known TV programs including Coronation Street and Location, Location, Location.
When you have exhausted all the town has to offer in the way of entertainment, you have the city of Manchester on your doorstep, packed with all manner of things to do and see.
Altrincham Property
Although there is a good selection of very nice homes for sale, prices across the town are expensive costing well over the national average.
However, there are some cheaper options available, particularly one and two-bedroom flats. These are priced under the £200,000 mark.
Traditionally middle-class, Altrincham has many large Victorian houses and family homes located just south of the town centre, vestiges of its connection with the railways during the Industrial Revolution and these properties make great family homes.
Neighbourhoods laying close to The Downs and Higher Downs conservation areas are very sought after with the priciest homes being in the little village of Hale.
Several new high rise apartment blocks have been erected in recent years. These are popular with young professionals as they tend to be located closer to the areas with good connections into Manchester.
