Situated just over halfway up the UK on the north east side, the City of Sunderland is home to approximately 185,000 people. Blessed with a beautiful coastline, the city sits on the south side of the river Weir.

There are seventy-six state primary schools covering the whole city. Twenty-six of which are within a two-mile radius of the city centre. Of these, Ofsted has rated twenty-two of them as “good”, three as “outstanding” and just one requiring improvement.
Primaries feed into eighteen secondary schools. Those who continue to attain high exam results include St Anthony’s Girls’ Catholic Academy, Barbara Priestman Academy and St Aidan’s Catholic Academy.
Sunderland College is the closest further education establishment. Spread across five campuses it has over 14,000 students and based on exam results is one of the region’s most successful colleges.
The University of Sunderland has been named the top university in England several times based on Government performance indicators which focus on the quality, range and quantity of its research.
Things to do in Sunderland
Away from Sunderland’s bustling city centre are miles of unspoilt coastline, home to the award-winning Roker and Seaburn beaches. The seafront is renowned for its smart promenades and golden sands, which give way to a wild coastline.
Culture lovers will enjoy the Sunderland Empire Theatre, National Glass Centre and Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens. Each a unique attraction and well worth visiting.
Those feeling energetic may like to choose between the Silksworth Sports Complex and its dry ski-slopes, or the Olympic-size swimming pool at the Aquatic Centre, which is part of the expanding Stadium Village complex.
Souter Lighthouse and The Leas present visitors with stunning views from the top of the lighthouse. The guided tour ensures that you learn all about the history of the building and its past keepers.
Families will also enjoy Herrington Park. One of the largest parks in Sunderland with walks, cycle trails, an adventure play area, skateboarding ramps, model boat sailing in the lake and a variety of sculptures that celebrate the heritage of the area.
