Why Move to Middlesbrough?
Forming part of the County Borough of Teesside and sitting on the River Tees, Middlesbrough was founded in 1830. At that time there was just one farm and a population of 25.
Today Middlesbrough is a vibrant town with a population of around 180,000.
During the Victorian era, Middlesbrough was a major industrial town. Evidence of its past can still be seen in its beautiful Victorian architecture which survived heavy bombings during the Second World War.
Nowadays, the town is quite different. It is no longer reliant on the steel and coal industries as it once was, having re-invented itself through huge investment.
Halfway into a 20-year regeneration programme, almost £30 million has been spent updating and improving various sectors including infrastructure, local shopping areas, schools and leisure facilities. As a result, the economy has drastically improved and there has been a surge in new business.
Residents of Middlesbrough benefit from an urban lifestyle such as shopping and eating out, centred mainly around Baker Street and Bedford Street.
Whilst more rural pursuits are to be found to the south of the town at Flatts Lane Woodland Country Park.
Never more than twenty minutes from the East coast of the UK or the beautiful countryside of the North Yorkshire Moors, Middlesbrough is where culture and commerce converge.
Well connected to the rest of the UK and Europe, the town has three airports within 1 hour’s drive away.
Its transport links either by road or train offer convenient and quick commuting access to Durham, Sunderland, Newcastle and the rest of the country.
Middlesbrough Schools & Education
Living in Middlesbrough provides access to a varied choice of schools when it comes to education.
You can choose from a selection of 10 secondary schools; Macmillan Academy Secondary is highly rated by Ofsted as is Outwood Academy Riverside.
Amongst the best primaries are Abingdon Primary and Ayresome with both achieving good results following their last Ofsted inspections.
There are also several colleges and sixth-form colleges to choose from, the largest of which is Middlesbrough College. Teaching around 16,000 students, it predominantly provides further education, but also some selected higher education courses too.
Middlesbrough became a university town in 1992; the University of Teesside has more than 20,000 students from all over the UK and some international students. The Uni has recently ranked in the top 5 animation schools and colleges in the UK.
