Why Move to Hull
Kingston up Hull, or Hull as it is most commonly referred to, is located on the Humber estuary in the East Riding of North Yorkshire and is historically one of England’s most significant maritime cities, facilitating business and trade with northern Europe.
Hull was the second most bombed location after London during the Second World War and its fishing industries and local economy suffered heavily as a result. Investment in upscaling the city and a blooming arts scene has seen this city re-emerge from the shadows and attract people from all corners of the UK to settle here.
The economy is steadily making improvements with large companies such as Siemans setting up in the city and providing local jobs. The port has also been rejuvenated and houses some of the largest super ferries in the world, which operate from Hull. Nowadays however, the industry is very much geared around the retail, chemical and health care sectors. The cost of living in Hull is relatively low compared to other cities in the UK, there are a great selection of bars and restaurants and plenty of open green spaces for recreational purposes.
Once perceived as just another gritty northern town with a dour economic outlook, Hull has reignited outside interest, in large parts thanks to its thriving arts scene. In fact, Hull is experiencing somewhat of a renaissance culturally having been named UK City of Culture 2017 and hosts Freedom Festival each year, entertaining audiences with an extensive programme of theatre, comedy and music. The Humber estuary and its canals are visually stunning as is the 35 miles of heritage coastline which can be viewed from the Humber Bridge, the world’s longest single-span suspension bridge when it opened in 1981 (now sixth), and it impressively contains its own country park.
Property prices remain well below the UK average and are a major draw for families moving to the area, with detached properties and smaller town houses being snapped up at fractional prices. The city will certainly require investment to revitalise its local economy further, however it maintains good transport links for those looking to utilise Hull as a commuter hub. Working in Hull
As a cultural capital of the North, Hull has seen huge investment in recent years. The city has already seen the benefits and positive effects from the recent Humber Street Sesh and Freedom festivals. The neighbouring three floor Fruit Market is undergoing a massive transformation following a £700,000 cash boost from the Government Coastal Communities Fund. The development also includes new and refurbished commercial, retail and leisure space centred on Humber Street, complemented by a development of 101 new mews-style homes.
Four key sectors make up Hull’s economy. Being located on the river Humber, Ports and logistics is the largest sector. Hull hopes to become the ‘renewables capital of the UK’ over the next few years and other key industries include healthcare & technologies and food and drink. With many large companies based here such as the William Jackson Food Group, KCOM Group (internet providers) and MKM Building Supplies, there are more opportunities for employment in Hull than ever before.
The development of the C4Di centre within the Fruit Market is a world-class workspace for digital and technology companies and individuals and has helped enhance the city’s reputation as a place to do business. The Stage@TheDock also opened in August as the city’s newest outdoor venue hosting festivals and a host of entertainment events.
General Information
Once you have relocated to your new home in Hull, there is a whole host of important things you need to organise. Below is some practical information which may prove helpful.
Schools & Education
Hull City Council supports 14 secondary and 71 primary schools. Historically education provision has been poor, and Hull was often at the bottom of government GCSE tables. However, since 2007, positive progress is being made and now many schools are achieving good Ofsted results. One of which is the highly regarded Malet Lambert School, which received a ‘Good’ rating from its last Ofsted inspection.
The colleges in Hull are exemplary and amongst the best in the country. The Hull York Medical School was formed as a joint venture between the local university and the University of York, as part of a government scheme to train more doctors. The University of Hull, which was founded in 1927 and received its Royal Charter in 1954 now has more than 16,000 students and around 2,500 employees, including more than 1,000 academic staff.
