Things to do in Hitchin
The attractive medieval church of St Mary in Hitchin has always played a huge part in the town’s identity. It can trace its origins back to the late 8th century. A peaceful place to spend an hour exploring, its medieval timber roof (or more correctly roofs in the plural).
The eastern end of the north aisle roof dates to the early 14th century and is an outstanding example of medieval timber construction. a beautifully carved 15th-century font and other amazing features.
For those who love food, the town has a large variety of restaurants from chic urban to Mediterranean cuisine, Italian to Chinese and Indian, you can almost eat your way around the world. Its old pubs are some of the oldest in the region.
Hitchin Lavender farm is a popular attraction. Set in over 25 miles of lavender fields you can pick your own lavender. The little ones can roam in the outside play area whilst you relax and enjoy lunch or homemade cake in the onsite restaurant and explore the gift shop.
The town has plenty of festivals all year and running for over 20 years, the highlight in the Hitchin events calendar, is Hitchin Festival.
It has a programme of over 100 events running throughout the town over the summer months. The festival celebrates the artistic, cultural and community spirit that makes Hitchin a desirable historical market town.
